The 'Grant Application' form, accessible from the button on the homepage, explains the criteria of eligible organisations for funding. Every grant application is considered by the Board of Directors. Groups and organisations can come from Taff Bargoed area. Primarily the wards of Bedlinog and Trelewis, Treharris and Nelson. Groups and organisations outside this area may also apply, if their activities will directly benefit local residents and businesses in the Taff Bargoed area.
The microhydro system referred to on this Friends of Taff Bargoed Park Limited website, is a small scale hydroelectric power plant.
At the top of the main cascade is a weir with a water extraction point here some of the water from the river is taken into a control chamber then down an underground pipe known as a penstock this passes under Glynbargoed Road into the turbine house where the energy from the falling water is converted to electricity this is exported to the local grid via a sub station located on the roadside. The water returns to the river down an open channel known as a tailrace.
A limited company was chosen as the form of organisation for FOTBP as it provides the best combination of security for both directors and our funders.
It is hoped in the long term to move to a charitable form of limited company such as a CIC
Offering smaller grants enables FOTBP to benefit more local groups,
The hydro scheme relies on an adequate flow of water in the Taf Bargoed river this is fed by both groundwater and rain running off the hills surrounding the valley. In long dry periods the river flow will fall to a point where the turbine cannot operate, it will them shut down automatically
Note: Our operating licence from NRW means we have to leave some water to run down the cascade.
FOTBP would like to recruit volunteers for a number of roles:
Practical works:
Including helping to maintain the system, cutting the grass and hedges around the turbine house and its entrance, minor repairs to the building.
Management roles:
People with experience of finance, running charitable groups, secretarial skills, grant aiding and mechanical / electrical systems.
