The medium head Crossflow hydro turbine was successfully installed and commissioned in May 2016.
This followed six years of development from initial feasibility, licensing, build through to commission. The hydropower development has a capacity of 100kW and generates approximately 420MWh per annum, equivalent to the average electricity needs of about 150 average households in Wales. The energy is exported through the local grid and generates an income through the Feed In Tariff and sales of electricity.
Environment Wales provided financial support, allowing Friends of Taff Bargoed Park Ltd to commission the initial feasibility study.
Robert Owen Community Banking Fund provided financial support to secure the grid connection at the site.
Welsh Government provided development officer support and financial support, in the form of development grants and capital loan through Ynni’r Fro and Local Energy.
Hydromatch Consulting Ltd provided the hydropower engineers, who delivered excellent commitment and work towards the project: from feasibility through to install and operational support.
Calibre Contracting Ltd were the chosen civil contractors, who delivered the civil engineering aspects at the site.
The £500,000 Hydro Scheme was switched on in 2016 by Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Environment & Rural Affairs Lesley Griffiths, AM.
