History

The creation of a conference in Topology, Algebra and Category Theory on the African continent was initiated with the formation of the Topology Research Group (TAU) at the University of South Africa in 2009.

The inception of first embracing the SADC regions in the immediate neighbourhood of UNISA began with the first leg of the African footprint, a Miniconference on Algebra, Geometry, and Topology that was held at the University of Botswana in August 2010. This journey in embracing our colleagues across the regions in 2011 culminated in AGT2011, the Miniconference on Algebra, Geometry, and Topology in Namibia during September.

The 2012 leg of the initiative saw the conference in the heart of Pretoria, hosted by TAU at UNISA. Invited eminent colleagues and participants from the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch, the University of the Western Cape, the University of KwaZulu Natal, the University of Pretoria, the University of Limpopo, and Unisa formed part of the local delegation with joint participation from our neighbouring colleagues at the University of Botswana and the University of Namibia. We continue to embrace greater participation across the continent.

TACT2012 was dedicated to the memory of one of Unisa's most eminent scholars, the late Professor Sergio Salbany, who pioneered contributions in asymmetric and bitopological spaces:
