Pt. Suddhashil Chatterjee is a distinguished Santoor artist of the younger generation, recognised for his refined aesthetics and deeply immersive musical expression. Rooted in a strong foundation of Hindustani vocal music—initially nurtured under his mother and later under Pt. Samaresh Chaudhury. His musical journey reflects a rare synthesis of vocal sensitivity and instrumental mastery.
His transition to the Santoor began under the guidance of renowned maestro Pt. Tarun Bhattacharya, where he developed a strong technical base. This was further enriched through advanced training under Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar of the Maihar-Senia Gharana, shaping his command over the intricate tantrakari style. The defining influence in his musical evolution has been the aesthetic and spiritual guidance of Padma Vibhushan Pt. Shivkumar Sharma, whose tutelage has deeply informed Suddhashil’s artistic identity. He continues to refine his craft under the guidance of Pt. Dhananjay Daithankar, a senior disciple of Pt. Shivkumar Sharma.
Suddhashil’s music is marked by a rare balance of technical precision and emotive depth. His approach to raga development is contemplative, often bringing out a tranquil and introspective dimension of Indian Classical Music, while navigating the inherent complexity of the Santoor with remarkable clarity. His performances resonate across audiences, transcending linguistic and cultural boundaries, and have been noted for their ability to evoke a profound emotional connection.
