Basic Essentials

  • Trail Mixes
    • Non-nut ingredients:
      • Seeds: Pumpkin, sunflower (no shells), sesame, hemp (high ω-3 oils), flax (high ω-3 oils)
        • Hemp, sesame, and flax seeds tend to be small. They can be baked into "sticks". Here's a sesame stick recipe. You can replace some sesame seeds with hemp and/or flax to create your own style sticks.
      • Dried fruits: Apple, banana, cherries, strawberries, figs, mango, dates, raisins. (Try to avoid products with added sugar.)
      • Whole-grains: Chex cereal, shredded wheat, toasted oats, air-popped popcorn
      • Other ingredients: coconut flakes, sesame sticks, chocolate chips (darker chocolates have more anti-oxidants and don't melt as easily), yogurt-covered items (pretzels, raisins), wasabi peas, dried ginger
      • Seasoning / spices (optional): Sea salt, curry, ground ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cayenne pepper
    • Nut ingredients:
      • Healthy favoites: cashews, almonds, pistachios, peanuts, walnuts,
      • High-calorie nuts (use in moderation): macadamia, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, pecans, pine nuts
