Systems For Survival 2023

Embarking on The Experience

Students will traverse through time, unraveling the narratives of the past, scrutinizing the intricacies of the present, and envisioning the realms of the future. As we dissect stories and situations, we morph into astute researchers, delving into a medley of ideas, solutions, and expert insights. Our quest for comprehension takes us to the crossroads of the human and natural worlds, where relationships and cause-effect dynamics unfold. Through a lens of systems thinking, we discern the interconnectivity weaving through time and knowledge, realizing that this intricate tapestry is pivotal for fostering change and ensuring survival.

Navigating Survival through Time, Space, and Place

Introduction:

Welcome to our exploratory learning journey where the quest for survival forms the core of our inquiry. Through this project, we aim to unravel the universal essentials needed for survival, transcending boundaries of time, space, and place. Whether it’s thriving on Earth(Ancient Egypt, All Thirteen), the Moon, or Mars via NASA’s Artemis missions, the fundamental elements remain constant. This project endeavors to instill a robust understanding and appreciation of these universal constants among our learners.

Universal Constructs Integration:

The project is intertwined with the Universal Constructs, which significantly enhance our learners' competency in essential life skills. Through this integration, we aim to foster critical thinking, complex communication, creativity, collaboration, flexibility, and productivity among our students. These skills are vital in navigating the complex systems that they will encounter throughout their lifetime.

Understanding Complex Systems:

The world we live in is an intricate web of interconnected systems. Through this project, we provide a platform for our learners to experienc, navigate, understand, and process these complex systems. Our approach cultivates a problem-solving mindset, enabling students to tackle real-world challenges with confidence and competence.

United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

Incorporating the UN’s 17 SDGs, we encourage our students to explore sustainable survival solutions. These goals serve as a guide for our learners to understand the broader societal and environmental contexts of survival. By analyzing and working towards these global objectives, our students are better positioned to contribute to sustainable survival solutions, irrespective of time, space, or place.

Driving Question

Our driving question, "What are the ingredients required to survive regardless of time, space, and place?" serves as a compass guiding our inquiry. This question encourages learners to wrap their minds around the multifaceted nature of survival, promoting a deeper understanding of the skills, mindsets, and dispositions necessary to thrive in any environment.

Project Activities and Lessons:

As you navigate through the lessons and activities, you will observe a coherent thread binding the driving question, Universal Constructs, understanding of complex systems, and the UN’s 17 SDGs. Each activity is designed to provide a holistic learning experience, fostering the ability to adapt, innovate, and sustain in various scenarios of existence.

We invite you to embark on this enlightening journey with us. Through engaged learning and thoughtful exploration, we aspire to equip our learners with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to navigate survival, making meaningful contributions to a sustainable future irrespective of the time, space, or place they find themselves in.

Prior Examples of This Project

2022 Experience

During the 2022-2023 school year we further enhanced the project and expanded to more schools

What was amazing was how we continued to learn new things as educators and the students were able to develop ideas so vastly different from the year before.

Just as society and the world evolves so does our learning and teaching.

This link will take you to the  project website from 2022-2023 school year where we documented pretty much everything we could manage while learning, adjusting, and pivoting throughout the course of the project based on needs of the students.

2021 Experience

During the 2021-2022 we developed this project. It was the first year to figuring out how to layer and weave in all the elements of what we believed learning and teaching could and should look like, feel like, sound like, and endure.
