Local Community Description

Taiwan's wind power community is rapidly expanding, driven by ambitious renewable energy goals and favorable geographical conditions. With a strategic focus on offshore wind farms, Taiwan aims to diversify its energy mix, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and mitigate environmental impacts.  The government's policies, including feed-in tariffs and streamlined regulatory processes, have attracted significant investment from both domestic and international stakeholders. Taiwan's unique position in the Asia-Pacific region, characterized by strong, consistent offshore winds, makes it an ideal location for wind energy development. Community engagement is a vital aspect of Taiwan's wind power initiatives, with efforts to consult and collaborate with local communities to address concerns and ensure project sustainability. Public awareness campaigns, educational programs, and stakeholder consultations are integral to fostering understanding and acceptance of wind energy projects. These initiatives not only contribute to Taiwan's energy security but also position the island nation as a regional leader in sustainable development and climate action.  Overall, Taiwan's wind power community embodies collaboration, innovation, and environmental stewardship, paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

Project Summary

Green energy, particularly wind power, has emerged as a significant global trend in recent years. Wind power generation is one of the prominent avenues being pursued for sustainable energy solutions, contributing to the collective effort to better preserve our planet.In addition to environmental benefits, wind energy promotes economic growth through job creation and stimulating infrastructure investment. The development of wind farms requires skilled labor for manufacturing, installation, and maintenance, thus creating employment opportunities for urban and rural areas. Moreover, wind energy projects attract investment, driving innovation and economic development in local communities. By harnessing wind energy, we can not only mitigate climate change but also foster prosperous economies through sustainable energy practices, ensuring a better future for generations to come. Also, the eleventh goal of SDGs is to build sustainable cities and communities, which shows the importance of green energy. On the other hand, based on discussions at the International Forum on Just Transition, wind power generation represents a pivotal pathway towards sustainable energy transition. With its growing prominence in global energy agendas, wind power stands as a beacon of environmentally conscious development.

Challenges to Overcome 

Initially, our team chose wind power generation as the project theme; however, after conducting preliminary research, we discovered some challenges that needed to be overcome. First, we found that the broad range of technologies and knowledge involved in wind power meant that the scope of the project was too broad to allow in-depth study of specific issues. To overcome this challenge, we decided to focus on specific topics to facilitate deeper research and discussion from originally focusing on renewable energy to focusing on wind power generation. Secondly, we encountered difficulties such as accessing relevant data and resources, as well as understanding the potential impacts of wind power generation on local communities. To address these issues, we plan to enhance cooperation with industry experts and relevant stakeholders to acquire more information and resources, and to better understand these impacts. Finally, we also face challenges in communicating and promoting our research findings. To overcome these obstacles,we plan to use a variety of media and channels to share our research results and raise awareness of the importance and potential of wind power.

Integration with the Curriculum

Nowadays, the concepts of renewable energy and education are increasingly emphasized in schools and integrated into various educational activities. Through our research on wind power generation, we explore its historical development, technological innovations, advantages, drawbacks, and environmental impacts. Furthermore, we delve into the design of wind turbines, the operation of wind farms, and the challenges of wind energy generation, providing us with the opportunity to deepen and broaden our understanding of renewable energy. 

While researching wind power generation, we practiced effective teamwork through collaboration and division of tasks, further enhancing our teamwork and project management skills. This enabled us to efficiently allocate tasks and achieve our research goals. To gain a deeper understanding of this research project, we utilized online resources and conducted interviews, expanding our knowledge of wind power beyond traditional textbooks, highlighting the effectiveness of learning methods based on the internet and professionals' insights. Through our efforts in studying this topic, our aim is to inspire others to embrace renewable energy solutions, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Use of Information Technology

The Role of Ambassadors

In recent years, due to the increasing awareness of environmental protection and the urgent global environmental issues, we have engaged in various forms of interaction both online and offline, as well as in-person with the community, to promote awareness of wind power generation and environmental protection.  Firstly, we personally visited wind power companies such as Siemens Gamesa and Taiwan Power Company for interviews to gain insights into wind power generation. These interactions allowed us to directly engage with industry experts, understand their work firsthand, and incorporate their professional knowledge into our projects.  Secondly, we visited wind turbine installation sites and component manufacturing facilities to acquire practical knowledge about the process of wind power generation. These field visits enriched our understanding and provided valuable content for our e-books and presentations.  Additionally, we distributed questionnaires to the public to understand their awareness and attitudes towards wind power development. This effort involved contacting people of all age groups through email, phone calls, and face-to-face interactions. The responses we received helped us understand public opinion and provided information for our advocacy work.  In terms of presentation and promotion, we utilized online platforms and in-person speeches to share our project findings and advocate for the adoption of renewable energy. Whether through virtual classrooms, school assemblies, or community events, we actively conveyed the importance of wind power generation and encouraged collective efforts towards a sustainable future. We actively engaged with stakeholders, solicited feedback, and fostered awareness of environmental responsibility in the community. Through diverse promotional efforts, we hope to enhance public understanding of wind power development in Taiwanese society and further the advancement of green energy.

Implications to the Local Community

Our project aims to raise public awareness about the impacts of wind power generation. This includes educating them about the benefits of wind power, its potential contributions to the future green energy industry, and fostering consideration of environmental issues. Conversely, the project also aims to inform people about the lesser-known advantages and disadvantages of wind power generation. However, despite these drawbacks, they are not significant enough to outweigh the substantial contribution of wind power to the environment. Instead, they encourage collective reflection on how to improve and maximize its benefits.

Our initiative goes beyond simply imparting knowledge to those unfamiliar with this energy source. We aspire to catalyze societal action through our efforts to assist not only Taiwan but also the global community. Starting from grassroots exploration and advocacy, we aim to inspire tangible societal action. Our goal is to propagate ideas from local communities to the global stage.

While our organization may seem incapable of achieving such profound impact, if we don't strive to raise awareness for environmental protection, then who will? Despite our seemingly modest contributions, we can still find ways to collectively improve our society, Taiwan, and our planet. Protecting the world starts with each of us taking action!
