Volunteer Opportunities

Supportive Service

The support services provided by SYLS  would not be possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of countless volunteers. Volunteers with SYLS members  contribute over countless hours of service each year and continue to uphold their commitment to building communities and changing lives at each of the Somali Youths & their families. Volunteers have the opportunity to contribute their time and skills as:

Youth activities / recreation facilitators

Children living in our Calgary communities need caring, patient and compassionate individuals to assist with many after school activities. The possibilities of activities are endless and we would love to capitalize on your strengths and skills to better the community in which our families live! We focus on helping youth develop life skills that will allow them to succeed in school… and life! Do you have what it takes to make a difference in a child’s life?

Arts & Crafts Facilitators

Share your artistic skills to enrich the free-time of the youth on our properties! Arts & Crafts projects can be as simple as painting and/or coloring, or as complex as working with different mediums. Your passion for the arts could be the encouragement that our youth need to pursue their interests in this creative field. We request a 3-month commitment to this position. Archway can provide supplies and equipment as needed.

Technology instructors

This volunteer opportunity provides the chance for community members to offer their computer/technology expertise to our youths. Our community themselves have requested support for improving their computer skills. The potential volunteer would work with the youth and their families to develop basic to intermediate level computer/ word processing / web navigation skills. Patience and flexibility are a must. As is a high comfort level in working with speakers of other languages.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructors

Many adults in our communities need assistance with basic conversational ESL instruction. We are looking for a compassionate instructor who can take time to help many somali parents  whose native language is not English. Instruction will take place one evening per week for up to one hour per session.

Girls Programming Facilitators

Join the Somali Youth as we develop and implement gender-specific programming for girls who live in our communities! With the support of our City of Calgary, you can make a difference in the life of a girl! We need creative and outgoing program volunteers to design activities, facilitate discussions, and mentor young girls in our communities. If you are passionate about youth development, have experience or interest in working with youth and want to make an impact in the life of a girl, please consider joining Somali Youth League Society as we seek to build community and change lives!

Adult Education Volunteers

Kids aren’t your thing? No Problem! There are many opportunities to work with our adult community at Somali Youth Centre. Families have requested support in the areas of career development, financial planning, parenting, conflict management and fitness classes. If you feel you have something to offer in one of these areas (or a different one!) don’t hesitate to contact us!
