The Swing Thing began as a simple idea: to create a welcoming space where people could enjoy swing dancing, connect with others, and celebrate the joy of movement. It all started with Kalie, the main organizer, who deeply missed dancing after the COVID-19 situation put a pause on social gatherings. Determined to bring swing dancing back into her life—and the lives of others—she set out to create a space where dancers of all levels could come together once again.
In its early days, The Swing Thing operated informally, meeting in various community spaces whenever a venue was available. The goal was to rebuild a local swing dance scene that was accessible, fun, and open to everyone. As interest grew, so did the need for a consistent location. Eventually, H.S. Paul School became the home of The Swing Thing, offering a regular space for dancers to come together every Tuesday night.
From the beginning, the organizers focused on variety, ensuring that each week featured a different style of swing—from Lindy Hop and East Coast Swing to Charleston and Blues. Music selections blended classic swing-era tunes with modern swing-inspired tracks, keeping the energy fresh and inviting for dancers of all ages.
Over time, The Swing Thing became more than just a dance event—it became a community. Beginners found encouragement, experienced dancers found inspiration, and friendships flourished on the dance floor. What started as Kalie’s way of rediscovering her love for swing has grown into a vibrant gathering place where the joy of dance is shared, one step at a time.
