Our goal is to provide housing for a selected few of students at the conference. This housing will be in a hotel within walking distance to the conference center in which the SWE Conference will be hosted, with free continental breakfast and Wifi.
For this housing, SWE UL is fundraising this spring, through the summer, and into the fall with events such as SWE Snacks on the Street and Give-Back Nights.
The money raised is directly proportional to the hours spent and preparations made from volunteers. A herculean effort from over a dozen individuals is required to pull together the funding to attend the Conference, and that's why volunteers with a minimum of 30 points earn housing to the conference from SWE UL.
How to get volunteer points? Sign up in the Events page of this website for shifts and show up.
With remaining funds, SWE UL will also reimburse registration fees after the conference to those volunteers with over 30 points. We will maintain this system on a merit basis, so the more you volunteer, the more financial aid you receive. Any cheating or attempts at cheating will disqualify you from any financial assistance (see more in “The Ethics of the Volunteer Point System”).
Before we tell you about the wide array of opportunities we have lined up for you to earn volunteer points, please let us hold a discussion on ethics. In the last section, we mentioned “any cheating or attempts at cheating will disqualify you from any financial assistance.” Here’s how we define cheating:
Sending someone to take your place.
If you sign up, you have to complete the allotted time you committed to.
Likewise, “forgetting about the date/time/place” is not a valid excuse and is considered unethical. Please remember that many of our events double as tours or programs that have limited seating, and that you would take the opportunity away from someone else by not attending.
Showing up and leaving early.
To receive credit for a lot of our events, we ask that you post pictures of your work in our Facebook page. Do not sign up, show up, snap a picture, and then leave.
We will be in contact with those presiding over these events and take action accordingly.
Fighting with fellow volunteers or attendees.
Attending any event intoxicated.
SWE UL is an engineering organization that serves its members. We want to be on your resume, give you scholarships, provide professional development, and help light the way to your career. To do this, our members are held to a professional standard. As it should be.
