Microjoining and microwelding

With miniature of components, the demand for small scale welding is ever increasing. One of the anticipiated applications of microwelding is in medical devices where both similar and dissimilar combination of materials with different geometric configurations are joined. Even non metallic materials are often joined in microdevices. The laser is most versitile source of microwelding processes. Next to laser, microplasma arc weldinbg can be considered as low cost and suitable source for microwelding applications. Process window for butt joint of 0.5 mm and 0.7 mm thickness titanium alloy, Inconel 718 and stainless steel have been developed using microplasma arc welding process both for similar and dissimilar combinartion of materials.

A double againg treatment is designed by reducing the holding time to improve weld joint properties of Inconel 718.
