BUILD-ING EXTENSIONS

Building Making interrogated different ways, methods and sections of construction process using high rise services, glossary of architecture terms, site management, details (spatial and technical) as its core anchor points. Design concept were further detailed to reach technical construction requirements whilst maintaining the fundamentals of the original design concept. Working drawings as a tool challenged certain details of material and construction requirement which led to questioning, nudging and negotiating with the set standards of the process. All of these helped understand the nuances of a MAKING OF A BUILDING from having a site within an urban context, its stakeholders, forces and particularities of site to its excavation, construction, fixations, and handover.

BUILDING MAKING
Building Making interrogated different ways, methods and sections of construction process using high rise services, glossary of architecture terms, site management, details (spatial and technical) as its core anchor points. Design concept were further detailed to reach technical construction requirements whilst maintaining the fundamentals of the original design concept. EXTENSIONS ON SITE
On the site, the extensions from/of a building, structure, walls, etc were a prominent observation. Further analysis, led to a nuanced understanding that these allowed a transformation of a formal space into an informal space accommodating various combinations of different programs, thus changing the nature and experience of space. A mechanical delayering of the extended

spaces was done to understand the relationship between the permanent built and temporal unbuilt space. The formwork of these was supported on/from the existing and further rested on a built wall or supports that meet the ground. This base analysis was further explored spatially into the design.

Temporary and Permanent

The built-form extends into permanent extensions in form of seats, railings and chaja not only in materialistic way but also increases the affordances to provide pause points, leisure space and safety. The temporal extensions allows transformations of spaces through human interventions as its larger intent. These makes the form of building dynamic in nature as it changes with space and time. The unit built for the community challenges the idea of a building having certain stakeholders after it is completed. Thus transferring the power to the community itself which allows generation of belonging and feeling of home by having operable extensions.

The idea of extensions was taken forward by having parts of roof retracting out to create different spaces underneath it and with the adjoining programs.

The geometry of cuboid was explored by splitting, adding, subtracting, dividing to form different spatial experience's specific to the different programs.

This was further regularized by having the retraction in a regularized grid of tracks moving in parallel direction

On the right, they extend outside the built program space and on the left they add on to a program space.

Design Development & Detailing

Construction Process

The construction process was broken down into several activities and few critical events such that the understanding becomes authentic to one's own design. Here, different building making factors of having a RCC structure, load bearing structure, exposed concrete or brick. precast concrete influenced the sequencing of steps.

Construction Management & Planning

SITE MANAGEMENT

Understanding of the flow and inflow of people, workers working, stakeholders, equipment's and material become important to plan a an efficient working space. Here, basic understanding of requirements of people like water, rest, medics, toilets and safety and factors of security, signages and access were sensitised.

BAR CHART

Identifying certain important activities for our design and the estimated time required to complete them was the foremost thing. Further bar chart was used to map out these weeks and its sequencing.

CRITICAL PATH METHOD

The bar chart was further nuanced using critical path method were the late event time (LET) and earliest event time (EET) for the activities were calculated.

Construction Documentation

01 SITE DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Indian Patent Stone (IPS) flooring of 75mm thick is used for exterior plinths of various heights ranging from 150mm to 1150mm. The plinths are turned around tress creating nooks and spaces of leisure.

02 LINE OUT PLAN

Two main datum points are established from the retained compound wall between the maidan and school. Another checkpoint is referenced from the wall edge of nallah. Centre lines A,B,..., W and 1,2...,15 forms the main Centre line grid for isolated footings; aa, bb..., hh and 21,2.2...,3.2 forms the another centre line grid for the shallow foundation.

03 FOUNDATION PLAN

Isolated footings are used as foundations for transferring the loads of RCC columns. Brick Shallow foundation are used for supporting the c oads of the extended plinths of varying heights.

04 GROUND FLOOR PLAN

The layout shows the relationship between the built and unbuilt spaces, major access points, extended spaces. service elements, level differences, etc.
