Instead of starting from a given programme through precedent studies, and standards, the studio through its What is? provocation asks students to critically understand the programme and its relationship to the institution’s deep spatial structure in order to be able to rethink the configuration for a new idea of an institution and a more egalitarian spatial structure. What is the genesis of the programme? What is the deep structure of space? Was this configuration produced by the society? Did it produce the particular society? From the above analysis and a study of a contemporary site, students are asked to speculate on possible emerging societal structures and develop a corresponding new type for the institution. This design process will be undertaken through exploratory drawings and models, drawing on the genealogical studies.

SITE 2 : BMC MARKET

The BMC Municipal market is located at the south of Dattani trade centre and is located opposite of Borivali station platform no.3.

A main spine having an informal market runs across the site along which the BMC market is situated with different spaces like dumpster, a garden, high court and different residential and retail shops.

Large retail shops with shopfronts take up the edge of this market. IT has specific entry points and has contained nature. mainly there are long linear corridors across which the different types of shops are located.

Most of the shops are platform based where the vendor comes and sets up his shops and others are a mix of small retail shops of everyday objects.

Across the site, people have used creative techniques to use the existing infrastructure for their needs. The flexibility to assemble roofs, mobile furnitures, use of extended plinths, etc.

How can existing micro strategies used across the site be used to rethink the nature of transaction that the edge affords and thus the emerging types of different programs ?
