SVUSD 1:1 is an initiative to bring 21st century tools into the hands of our students. The purpose of the 1:1 implementation is to ensure 100 percent of SVUSD schools will be properly equipped for our students to have a technology-enriched learning environment.
All SVUSD teachers will have the proper training and resources to effectively integrate appropriate technology (hardware/software/internet) into their lessons in order for our young people to acquire the skills they need to be effective 21st century citizens and workers.
Our high school graduates will exhibit a range of functional and critical thinking skills related to information, media, and technology. They will use technology as a tool to research, organize, evaluate, and communicate information. They will use digital technologies, communication/networking tools, and social networks appropriately to access, manage, integrate, evaluate, and create information to successfully function in a knowledge economy.
The 1:1 technology implementation is an excellent opportunity for our students to gain key skills that will help them be successful in high school, college, and careers. As part of our instructional program, your child will be participating in a number of online platforms and resources designed to help develop collaboration and communication skills, provide for creativity, and explore producing content for a larger audience. Students will be creating content (written, visual and verbal) and then sharing these creations using a variety of web-based tools such as wikis, blogs, and/or social learning networks.
This implementation would not be possible without the continued encouragement from our parents and community; therefore, on behalf of the District, thank you for all you do to support education.
The implementation of new technology into the classrooms of Buena High School in the 2018-2019 school year has allowed students and teachers to engage in education in a more efficient way through online communication and interaction. The administration of Buena High School has decided to grant students the opportunity and privilege to carry technology through campus into their homes, so they always have access to their online classwork and easy availability of research and the opportunity to expand their knowledge.
The use of technology in the modern world has become so popular that nearly all high school students are familiarized with the easy access to the internet and information that lies online. As technology advances, the use of it increases greatly. That is why Buena High School administrators have decided that incorporating the access of Chromebooks would benefit students and their levels of education as they not only take a giant leap in the way they obtain information at school, but also into how they integrate it in their everyday lives.
The use of Chromebooks has been a big change for both students and teachers, as they discover new ways to engage themselves through online classrooms, tests, communication, and applications. After speaking with a couple of teachers that have definitely taken advantage of this new technology, it is safe to say that Chromebooks have shaped an efficient way of allowing students to receive education through something they are familiar and comfortable with. Mike Tomooka, a beloved teacher at Buena High School, expresses that he believes Chromebooks have been without a doubt an advancement in the way education is portrayed in our school. He believes that students nowadays are too involved in technology and have great knowledge on its usage. He thinks the usage of Chromebooks allow students to be more efficient in their work as using new technology is something they look forward to. Although teachers may want to stick to their old-fashioned teaching style, he believes that if teachers oppose to using the technology, they could lose a sense of connection with their students. He expresses that the Chromebooks are valuable because “while students are having fun in their computer, they are expanding their knowledge as they practice communication.”
Many more teachers, such as Lea Staten, wish to incorporate the new technology in their classrooms by making it easier for students to conduct research in a much faster way than looking through a textbook. Although the use of textbooks and physical copies containing educational information is still highly treasured in BHS, Ms. Staten wishes to have her students turn in their assignments online to make it more practical for them. She believes that since advancements in technology occur so often, she sees the use of Chromebooks as more of “yet another tool in education” rather than an advancement. She expresses that there may be some teachers that do not understand the technology, so they may prefer to stick to textbooks and not implement technology in their classrooms at all — but in her eyes, she believes that Chromebooks will allow students to practice and research given topics and ideas in a way they enjoy.
