Oscar-winning documentary
Screening at the Latchis, March 21-27
Filmmakers: Basel Adra, Yuval Abraham, Hamdan Ballal & Rachel Szor
In Arabic, Hebrew, English with English subtitles (2024) - 95 min.
This vérité-style documentary made by a Palestinian-Israeli collective of four filmmakers over the course of Yasafer five years chronicles the systemic destruction of Masafer Yatta, a community of Palestinian villages in the West Bank. Palestinian activist Basel Adra and Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham film the bulldozing of homes and schools ... and the villagers' perseverance. In addition to indelible footage captured by its undaunted witnesses, No Other Land depicts an emerging friendship between Adra and Abraham. (The film has violent & disturbing, though not graphic, scenes.)
March 30 - From Ground Zero
22 short films from Gaza
Oscar-shortlisted for best international feature film
Director & film curator: Rashid Masharwi
Executive producer: Michael Moore
An anthology of 3- to 7-minute films made by Palestinian filmmakers in Gaza since October 2023. The mix of genres (documentary, fiction based on true stories, animation and video art) provides intimate glimpses into everyday life – from getting around on a donkey-pulled wagon to recycling water. Young people poignantly express their moments of grief from losing loved ones and moments of joy found in music and dance. Palestinians facing immense challenges demonstrate their creativity and sumud.
April 6 - Walled Off
Directed by Vin Arfuso (2024) - 90 min
Produced by Pink Floyd's Roger Waters & Nelson Mandela's grandson, Kweku
Overlooking Bethlehem’s graffiti-filled separation barrier, the Walled Off Hotel, gallery and Palestinian history museum – established by Banksy, British artist and activist – serves as the anchor for this eclectic documentary. It has everything from an animated road trip through the West Bank to clips of an interview with Yasser Arafat. The story weaves together Benjamin Netanyahu’s rise to power, intrigue with the Oslo “peace process," the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, the murder of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, and young Palestinians describing what “freedom” means to them.
April 13 - The Teacher
Oscar-nominated director & producer, Farah Nubulsi (2023) - 115 min
A feature film starring acclaimed Palestinian actor, Saleh Bakri
A Palestinian teacher struggles to reconcile his commitment to political resistance while supporting his students - brothers who took different paths - and grieving the loss of his teenage son. Meanwhile, an American couple fight for the return of their son, kidnapped while in the Israeli military.
“Culture is a crucial front for the struggle for dignity of the Palestinian people.”
