Burnout is pervasive—and preventable. Employees struggling with burnout are more likely to disengage, take sick days, and seek new roles. Yet most don’t recognize the early warning signs until it’s too late. Organizations need more than a wellness tip sheet—they need meaningful, engaging training that helps people take action before burnout sets in.

Burnout Buster is an interactive, game-based concept project that puts learners in the driver’s seat. Instead of passively clicking through content, learners explore three immersive worlds—Burnout Valley, Balance District, and Recovery Hill. Across seven challenges, they identify hidden stressors, apply science-backed strategies, and earn puzzle pieces, badges, and power-ups along the way. Each activity is learner-centered and designed to promote active decision-making, critical thinking, and self-reflection—all in 30 minutes or less.
Burnout Valley: Learners complete challenges and make decisions about the effects of chronic stress on the body.
Balance District: Learners identify burnout symptoms and learn to implement wellness strategies to stop them in their tracks.
Behaviors don't change through reading—they change through doing. This experience doesn’t just inform learners about burnout. Burnout Buster immerses learners in game play that helps them recognize burnout symptoms and practice prevention, equipping learners with tools to prevent burnout before it burns them. By recognizing real-world symptoms, navigating difficult conversations, and practicing prevention strategies, learners build the confidence to apply what they’ve learned when they face burnout symptoms on the job. For organizations, that means stronger teams, better retention, and a culture that actually supports wellness.

This project was built through deep iteration and evidence-based design. I used Articulate Storyline 360 to create interactive challenges, implement custom game mechanics, and build layered logic for branching scenarios, power-ups, and visual progress trackers. I revised the structure three times to align with real learner needs—based on user testing, feedback from peers, and insights from workplace wellness research. Each decision, from visual design to voice-over removal, was made to increase clarity, accessibility, and learner agency—resulting in an experience that’s as useful as it is engaging.
