St. Vincent de Paul Parish and School have a
growing tradition of excellent choirs!
The Schola Cantorum (“school of singing”) is a choral ensemble that sings at the 10am Sunday Mass from Labor Day through Pentecost, as well as scheduled holy days and special events. They are responsible for singing the Mass Propers and Ordinary, as well as hymns and choral music primarily in 1-2 parts. An emphasis is placed on singing and interpreting English chant as the sung prayer of the liturgy. Rehearsals are at 9:10am every Sunday morning, and once a month after Mass until 11:30am. No experience is required, only a willingness to learn and grow in your musicianship! Membership is open to middle-school students through adults.
In addition, a subset of the Schola forms a small group that learns and performs more advanced choral literature in a variety of styles, generally in 4 parts. The small group rehearses on Thursday evenings from 6-7:15pm. The small group is also called upon for special events including the bilingual liturgies of Holy Thursday, Easter Vigil, and the conferral of Confirmation.
Voces Ecclesiae (“Voices of the Church”) is a choral ensemble that sings for special liturgical events and parish funerals. Their repertoire draws largely from classic Renaissance polyphony and modern sacred choral music. The group’s flexible nature enables it to prepare advanced literature for high solemnities while also providing simple but highly effective music at funerals for the benefit of the deceased. Rehearsals are at noon on Fridays. The ability to read music is desirable but not required.
The Angelus Bells ring our parish’s 3 octaves of Schulmerich handbells and Malmark handchimes for high feasts of the liturgical year. Founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, they are a highly motivated group of musicians eager to learn the art of handbell ringing and the disciplines of music reading. On-the-spot training is provided for new members and potential substitute ringers - no experience is required! Rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 7:30-9pm.
The SVS Junior Choir is open to 3rd and 4th grade students at St. Vincent de Paul School. The choir learns the fundamentals of reading music and good musicianship through preparing the Mass Propers and Ordinary, hymns and special choral pieces for weekly school Masses on Tuesday mornings. Singers cultivate a strong sense of commitment necessary for the more advanced Senior Choir. Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays during recess.
The SVS Senior Choir is open to 5th through 8th grade students at St. Vincent de Paul School. The more advanced of two school choirs, Senior Choir works hard to put musicianly skills into practice by learning age-level choral literature for 1-3 parts. They sing for weekly school Masses on Thursday mornings, and some singers serve as cantor for the Responsorial Psalm. In addition the choir sings at special parish and school events, and may be invited to sing with diocesan-level choirs! Rehearsals are Tuesdays after school from 3-4:30pm.
The Coro de María, Reina de los Àngeles provides music for the 12pm Spanish Mass every Sunday. Its repertoire encompasses different styles of liturgical song in Spanish, from traditional chants to the best of contemporary compositions. Under the direction of Brad Todorovich, the choir regularly discusses elements of good vocal technique and music reading. Rehearsals are conducted primarily in English, on Wednesdays from 6-8pm. All are welcome!
Coros for the 7pm (Saturday), 2pm and 4pm (Sunday) Masses are led by dedicated parish volunteers. Each coro sings at their respective Mass year-round, and some are available for parish Quinceañeras. They meet periodically with our pastor and music director for training sessions. Please visit the choir loft after Mass if you are interested in participating!
