the 5^th VMU IFL and the 13^th LKPA international conference "Sustainable Multilingualism 2019"

The conference aims at bringing together scholars and language education professionals to share their research insights and discuss the issues relevant to the development of individual and societal multilingualism, including language policy, linguistic human rights, plurilingual pedagogy and language education in higher education.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Prof. JAMES PATRICK CUMMINS

University of Toronto, ON, Canada

Prof. James Patrick Cummins (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, Canada) has been a driving force in bilingual and multilingual education for the past four decades. His research has laid the foundation for understanding of bilingualism and the role of language and culture in society; his theories of BICS and CALP (Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency), CUP (Common Underlying Proficiency) have contributed to the field of minority language education and language education in general. Professor Cummins’ commitment to promoting language rights throughout the world, his cross disciplinary ideas, support for tolerant and equitable multilingual education has made him a catalyst for change across continents. Professor Cummins has published won a number of international academic awards and holds a number of editorial positions with various psychology journals.

Prof. EGIDIJUS ALEKSANDRAVIČIUS

Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuania

Prof. Egidijus Aleksandravičius (Department of History, Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuania) is a historian, a habilitated doctor of Humanities, a publicist, an active statesman and a well-known public intellectual. He is the head of Academia cum laude, an embodiment of VMU Artes Liberales principles in research and studies, and the director of Lithuanian Emigration Institute. Professor Aleksandravičius is also the president of the National Committee of the History of Lithuania, the chairman of the Board of the Open Lithuanian Foundation, a member of the Board of World Lituanistic Association and a member of Lithuanian Historical Society and the Samogitian Cultural Society. His research interests include history of the 19th century Lithuanian culture, historiography and history of Lithuanian emigration. He is the author of over twenty books and over a hundred articles published in Lithuanian and foreign scientific journals.

WORKSHOP

Prof. MERCÈ BERNAUS QUERALT

Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain

Prof. Mercè Bernaus Queralt (Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain) is a pre-service and in-service teacher trainer at national and international level for various organizations such as an NGO Learn to Change, Change to Learn. Professor Bernaus has extensive expertise in plurilingual and pluricultural education, project-based learning, education for democratic citizenship, inclusion, values and attitudes in education, action research and other fields of education. She has coordinated projects at the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) such as ConBaT+ and Language Educator Awareness (LEA), was engaged in ECML Training and Consultancy programs for member states where she delivered workshops such as ‘Supporting Multilingual Classrooms’. In 2007-2017 Professor was involved in the Pestalozzi programs for education professionals of the Council of Europe as a trainer.

All abstracts will be published in an online book of abstracts with an ISBN number.

The selected papers will be published in the international scientific journal Sustainable Multilingualism, indexed in MLA.

Since 2017, Sustainable Multilingualism is published by SCIENDO (former De Gryuter Open).
