We did it! The Stockton Unified School District Ethnic Studies Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) position was unanimously passed by the board at the Tuesday 6/23/20 Board Meeting. Thank you to the over 8,000 people who signed our petition and to the entire community for the love and support throughout this entire process. So many individuals helped to make this a reality, but it was our collective efforts that have gotten us this far.
However, the fight continues!
We are now actively beginning the stages of our next goal to form a "Stockton Ethnic Studies Advisory Committee" (name TBD by the community) to help inform the curriculum, vision, and help with accountability of the program. Additionally, we urge you all to support Stockton Coalition For Shared Safety and the fight for #PoliceFreeSchools in SUSD.

Dear Ethnic Studies in Stockton Supporters,
First off, thank you for your support in getting us to over 6,000 signatures! Your signatures represent the power of community and the growing movement for Ethnic Studies. As of Friday June 5th, though we have been working with the district since February to create and draft a job description for the Ethnic Studies Teacher Leader, the job description still has yet to be approved by Human Resources and put up for a vote by the school board.
More recently, we have been in communication with the district and will be meeting with both Interim Superintendent Biedermann and Interim Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Nikolas Howard, this upcoming week (6/8-6/12) to continue to apply pressure on the district to approve the job description so that it can be put up for a vote at the last school board meeting of the year on Tuesday June 23rd.
Now more than ever as we see a movement for justice and accountability nationwide, we need a strong Ethnic Studies program in our schools to continue this work. With Stockton Unified School District Police Department's current budget at $6 million, it's unfathomable that the district would claim they don't have the money for the 1 position we are asking for (and that has been unanimously approved in board resolution 19-24). The Ethnic Studies Teacher Leader would directly support and defend our program so that we can continue to empower our Black, indigenous, and students of color for generations to come.
We still need your support to hold the district and school board accountable. Please continue to share our petition to all of your students, families, and networks (link above).

Dear Community,
As people around the country mourn, protest, and organize in response to the murders of Black lives, we honor and demand justice for the recent lives lost: Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, George Floyd and the countless other Black lives killed at the hands of police in this country.
The Ethnic Studies in Stockton family stands in solidarity with our Black community and is continuing to support our students and their wellbeing through our curriculum, checking-in personally with them, marching alongside our local Black and non-Black community, and fighting to strengthen Ethnic Studies in SUSD.
Please help us continue to honor Black lives, now, and for future generations in Stockton and around the country by doing any of the following:

Dear Ethnic Studies Students,
Take a deep breath.
We are sure you have a lot of questions about the future right now. So do we. As your teachers and elders, we wish we could offer you more answers. We know, like us, understanding and coping with the COVID-19 virus brings up many emotions. However, try to remain hopeful that things will get better and remember that we need to work in solidarity and in community with one another to beat this virus together.
Yes, school has officially been cancelled for the remainder of the school year, though distance learning will begin April 6th. On this website you will find up-to-date resources to help you understand COVID-19, information on meal and technology distribution, resources to process and take care of yourself and your family, and suggestions on Ethnic Studies related media you can watch and listen to online. As always, please reach out to us individually if you have any questions or if you just want to check in.
