These are thirty-six stories from the seventeenth-century author Pu Songling's collection of classical tales called the Liaozhai Zhiyi 聊齋志異 which he claimed to have heard from others. Although he wrote in many genres, it is by this collection of stories that he is best remembered. I have loosely arranged my selection into three sections as "Favor and Gratitude," "Reap What You Sow" and "Dreams and Obsessions." For an example of one of the Liaozhai stories, see Inch-Tall Grass excerpt.
