Regarding SURP Payments
Please fill out the 2025 SURP Stipend Payment form HERE.
Determine your funding source.
Are you part of a bigger program where all students will be paid from the same Funding Source?
Example: Professor Chee Wei Wong directs the Functional Nanomaterials REU site, which pays between 8-12 students every summer from the same exact funding source.
Example: Associate Dean Santos’ directs the Samueli Research Scholars Program, which pays between 10-17 students every summer from the same exact funding source.
Or are you being paid from a single faculty funding source?
Example: Professor Joe Bruin’s single NSF Supplement grant, that could fund between 1-2 students.
Ask your host faculty how many weeks you will be funded and how much you will be paid every week. This is very important because every funding source is different and funding amounts are NOT standardized across labs.
Ask your host faculty how you will be paid: the most common responses should be
You will be receiving a Financial Aid BAM student research stipend
Note: All Financial Aid BAM student research stipends will be processed by SURP/Dean’s unit staff. Steve Jaramillo <sjaramillo@seas.ucla.edu> currently handles the Samueli Engineering schoolwide research stipend process.
OR be hired as a payroll employee by the department.
Note: All payroll hires will be handled by the faculty and their departmental staff.
If you will be receiving a Financial Aid BAM student research stipend, you must do the following:
Set up your Bruin Direct account, so that your BAM research stipend is directly deposited into your bank account.
If you are NOT a US citizen, then you must complete the Financial Aid Glacier Form.
You must complete the Glacier Form in order to receive your BAM research stipend. Even if we submit your Bam stipend, Financial Aid cannot distribute the money until your Glacier form has been completed. You can learn more about Glacier at this Dashew Center website.
Clear all holds. Financial Aid will not distribute your money if any holds are still active.
Note: if you have a Financial Aid balance due, your stipend will always be applied towards that balance and therefore, you may not actually receive a direct deposit distribution. This is a financial aid matter that SURP does not control.
Students must check BruinBill and bank account to confirm they received their research stipend.
Please complete the SURP Payment Form to notify SURP whether or not you have received your SURP payment.
If you have not received your stipend one week after completing the SURP Payment Form, please email SURP <surp@seas.ucla.edu) AND Steve Jaramillo: sjaramillo@seas.ucla.edu Subject Line: SURP student stipend.
If you will be hired as a payroll employee by the department, you must initiate that process immediately after the SURP orientation on the first day of the program.
NOTE: Hiring employees is an internal departmental function that SURP does NOT support. Students must confirm and notify faculty and departmental hiking staff that they have received their money via payroll.
