Hi, I am Dr. Surbhi Jain!
I am a Professional Educator/STEM mentor teaching Honors and AP Chemistry courses to high school students across the US.
My Goal: Committed to delivering the best of my knowledge to high-school students while inspiring and instilling a love for chemistry, focusing on building confidence rather than grade pressure, and providing a disciplined and collaborative environment to genuinely learn and succeed in exams.
My Mantra: Early Start Is The Key To Success
Since childhood, I was keen on studying chemistry major, inspired by my father running a distillation plant in India. I thoroughly enjoyed chemistry courses in high school to an extent that the concepts left a mark on my memory forever. Chemistry and Math remained my favorite subjects in high school. I started my career trajectory with my under-graduation from the Panjab University, Chandigarh (college topper honored with three gold medals). Later, pursued MS and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville under the guidance of Prof. Robert Davis (with 100% scholarship).
After finishing my Ph.D., I worked as a Senior Research Engineer at one of the world's leading Oil and Gas companies, ExxonMobil, located in Houston, Texas. I was awarded four US patents, Global Process Research and Global Process Technology Awards, and presented my research to executive management several times. After working at Exxon for 7 years, I had a turning point in my life when I had my first child. I decided to take a break and moved to Bay Area with my family. I joined Air Liquide at Fremont as a Scientist, leading the microcontaminant analysis of Client samples. Focusing on the upbringing of my child, I decided to quit the corporate career.
I have always been passionate about teaching since childhood, and it got reflected during my Ph.D. when I took a part-time opportunity as a chemistry tutor at the Global Scholar Online Tutoring Platform. I designed my courses and taught high-school and entry-level college courses in chemistry. I won the "Tutor of the Week" award as a token of appreciation. Reflecting on my passion for teaching, I started tutoring chemistry courses to high school kids in Bay Area.
I got my first student, who was enrolled in an AP chemistry course at American High School, Fremont. I had an amazing experience teaching her while self-learning the course myself. Parallelly, I got another student who was studying Honors chemistry course at Irvington High. I dived deep to understand the Honors and AP chemistry course structure in public high schools. Later, the pandemic unfolded the possibility of online teaching that allowed me to expand my horizon while teaching students from many schools such as American High, Irvington High, Mission San Jose High, Washington High, Cupertino High, Lynbrook High, Monta Vista High, University Prep Academy at San Jose, Bellarmine High at San Jose, Harker, Foothill, Dublin High, Amador Valley High at Pleasanton, California High at San Ramon, Gunn High School at Palo Alto, Dougherty Valley High at San Ramon, Palo Alto High School, Homestead High, Presentation High at San Jose, Silver Creek High, Leland High, Milpitas High, Santa Teresa High, Del Norte High at San Diego, etc.
Teaching students is not just a profession for me, but I find an important element of my life in it. I live with my students every day while inculcating discipline and very important life skills into them such as stress and time management, responsibility and ownership, and speaking up for oneself. I genuinely feel that students need lots of love, encouragement, care, and support to survive through the stressful years of high school. I firmly believe "Once students build confidence and start speaking up for themselves, and focus on learning the subject matter thoroughly, GRADES follow automatically". I am proud of all students who have coped up so well with the rigor of my classes while being ahead of their school curriculum and maintaining A grades at school, and exceptional scores of 5/4 on AP College board exam.
Thank You!
