Tucked away in Billings Park is a peaceful and inviting spot with authentic Japanese garden elements. Dedicated in July 2012, this garden was developed over several years with the expertise of landscape designers from both the Superior area and our Sister City. Generous support for the construction and maintenance of the Garden has been provided by Superior Rotary Club 40 and the City of Superior Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department.
See some pictures of this lovely garden below. The Superior Sister City Commission has formally adopted the Friendship Garden. If you are interested in assisting us with upkeep throughout the year, please send us an email or give us a call!
The Superior Sister City Commission partners with local organizations to promote our Sister City relationship with Ami-machi, Japan, and share Japanese culture in the community.
TRIO Student Support Services, the Music Department, and the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Department at UW Superior are hosted the Taiko Arts Midwest drumming group in Thorpe Langley Auditorium on Tuesday, October 3. Superior Sister City volunteers hosted a table there to answer questions about our delegation visit to Japan in summer 2024, and even got to try some drumming!
The Superior Sister City Commission was pleased to welcome a widely recognized and highly awarded professional Taiko drummer, Takumi Kato, and family to the area on August 22 and 23. Lake Nebagamon and Superior were stops on his mission to perform 1000 concerts in all 50 states in five years to spread peace, harmony, and appreciation for this traditional Japanese drumming style. The visit to Lake Nebagamon was the 255th performance towards this goal. Though the event in Superior was postponed due to weather, we were thrilled to bring this dynamic art form to Lake Nebagamon on 8/22 in collaboration with local partners. Both events were open to the public, and there was a great turnout in Lake Nebagamon.
We were pleased to be able to share holiday-themed origami and other crafts with visitors to Fairlawn Mansion at Halloween and Christmas in 2022.
