Prosecutors announced Tuesday that Mays and another man, Dominic Miller, were charged with second-degree murder and other counts in the shooting that brought a horrific end to what had been a gleeful celebration before a crowd that totaled an estimated 1 million people.
Three suspects have been detained following the shooting, which left one person dead and at least 22 others injured. Graves said that two of the suspects were juveniles. No suspect has yet been charged.
"It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs' rally. Our hearts and prayers are with her family," the station said in a Facebook post on Wednesday night.Ā

In preparation for the expected crowd size Wednesday, 800 law enforcement officers were on scene for the parade, Graves said. The heavy police presence helped in guiding fans to safety once the shooting began and also in administering lifesaving aid to gunshot victims, she said.
The shooting, west of Union Station, started right after the parade rally with Chiefs players including Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce had ended, Graves said. Videos of the scene shared on social media show crowds of people running away from Union Station as officers rush in.
Through 45 days of 2024, the shooting was already the 49th mass shooting of the year, according to figures compiled by the Gun Violence Archive. The site defines a mass shooting as any event in which four or more people are shot, whether injured or killed. It was also the third in Kansas City alone.

Spectrum News received a release from Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker saying it works regularly with juvenile court officers on cases including this one. The prosecutor added while her office doesn't oversee or supervise the juvenile officers, we work closely with them. Barker also said her office will continue to work with the police investigating the mass shooting.
Police say the shooting was the result of a dispute among several people and happened outside Union Station, where an estimated 1 million people had gathered for the Chiefs celebration. More than 800 members of law enforcement were already on the ground to support the celebration.
According to the Gun Violence Archive there had been 49 mass shootings so far this year as of Feb. 13, the day before the Kansas City incident. Nearly 5,000 people have been killed by gun violence in 2024, according to the archive. The shooting on Wednesday marked the 25th mass shooting the Kansas City area had seen in the last five years, local reports noted.

The incident was at least the 48th mass shooting in the US in 2024, according to the Gun Violence Archive organisation, which counts those in which four or more people are shot, not including a perpetrator.

At least one person was killed and multiple people, including young children and teens, were wounded in a shooting near Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, at the conclusion of the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory parade Wednesday, officials said. Three people, including two juveniles, were detained but authorities still have not identified who was behind the shooting.
At least 22 people were wounded in the shooting, Graves said Thursday. Kansas City Fire Chief Ross Grundyson said eight were in critical condition, seven were in serious condition and six had minor injuries.
Three people were taken into custody shortly after the shooting, Graves said. One suspect was arrested after being chased by police shortly after the shots were fired, Graves said earlier Wednesday. Several firearms has been recovered, Graves said Thursday.
