Gold-filled jewelry is an excellent alternative to gold jewelry. As the name imply, gold filled has gold in it. It is different from gold plated because the layer in gold plating is very thin and quickly wears away, exposing the underlying base metal. Gold-filled wire, on the other hand is not just dipped in gold. A layer of 14k gold is mechanically pressed onto the base metal. Heat is also applied to ensure the gold bonds with its base metal. The layer of gold needs to be a minimum of 5%, which is the legal requirement to be classified as gold-filled. When the gold filled loses its luster, it can be cleaned using the method in our care instructions. Gold-filled can handle everyday wear and still last for several decades. For extra care, keep away from harsh chemicals and salt water. This will assist in avoiding frequent polishing. 

Stainless steel is an excellent alternative to gold-filled jewelry. It is tarnish-resistant and can handle constant wearing. The look of the stainless is a bit different than that of the gold-filled jewelry as it does not contain a coat of actual gold on it. However, we strive to find stainless products that are as close to gold in their appearance. Stainless can also get wet without turning its color on you. Our tarnish-resistant wire has a coating baked over it to keep it from tarnishing. As long as the coat is intact, the wire will not turn color. It will as it gets scratched, and, depending on chemicals it gets in contact with, turn color but tarnish can also be removed, leaving the jewelry beautiful and shiny once more. Once worn however, the base metal ,typically copper will be exposed. The tarnish-resistant wire it's typically used along with stainless steel or maybe used alone in certain pieces.
