led by John Hodges
Meet at 9:00 at Wilson Creek estuary
At Wilson Creek traffic light, turn off the highway towards the water. Follow the road round to the right and park on the gravel at the side of the road before you reach the new apartment building.
We will be looking for migrating shorebirds (heading south already) here and at Mission Point.
SCNHS Geology Field Trip
Wednesday, August 12th, 2026
Francis Point
Meet at the Francis Point Provincial Park Car Park at the west end of Merrill Road, off Francis Peninsular Road on the south side of Pender Harbour at 9:30 am.
We will be looking at fine grained volcanic rocks that have been intruded by basalt in several places and seeing the contact relationships and mineralization between the two rock types. Generally the rocks along the coast of the Sechelt Peninsular are coarse grained granodiorites with a salt and pepper appearance so this is quite different.
There are also deposits of boulder clay/till that were deposited beneath the ice sheets of the last Ice Age as well as some glacial erratics – boulders that have been carried by the ice sheets from one location to another location.
The path system at the Provincial Park is reasonably easy walking – there are a couple of steeper scrambles to negotiate to reach the Francis Point navigation light.
Please bring sturdy footwear, dress for the weather that day including a hat for rain/drizzle or sun – there is little shade on the hike, something to drink and a snack.
Geologist and SCNHS Member Peter Hews will lead the trip.
