Network is part of the Scout Movement, a worldwide youth movement with over 57 million members worldwide. It serves as the sixth and final section of the Scout Association's youth programme, and is open to anyone aged between 18 and 25. Scout Network's programme of activities is based around three pillars: Adventure, Community, and International. Network operates a member-led model, where it's the members - rather than a group of older leaders - who decide what they want to do, and then make the plans to make it happen. This means the possibilities are basically limitless for Network activities; the only limit is the imagination of the members!
In 1907, Lord Robert Baden-Powell changed the world with his first experimental Scout Camp taking place on Brownsea island. This led to the formation of what's now the world's largest youth movement: Scouting.
In early 1908, the world's first Scout Troop was inspected by Baden-Powell, right here in Sunderland. The Vaux Own Troop was set up and run by Colonel Vaux, who is perhaps most well-known for lending his name to the local brewery!
It wasn't long, before Scouting expanded to welcome in members who were young adults rather than children; Senior Scouts (for 15 - 18 year-olds) and Rover Scouts (for those over 18) started in 1918!
This arrangement lasted many years, until 1967, when the sections merged into Venture Scouts, for those aged 16 - 20. This arrangement changed again in 2003, splitting the section back into two, Explorer Scouts (14 - 18) and Scout Network (18 - 25).
Sunderland Network was first registered with The Scout Association Headquarters on 7th September 2015, and has been providing Adventure, Community, and Skills for Life ever since!
Even within Scouting itself, there's a bit of confusion as to what exactly Network is, and we want to dispel two common myths...
Scout Network is one of The Scout Association's youth sections. This means that anyone can join, whether they've been involved in scouting before or not. It also means that we're not just a group of volunteers; we run our own programme of activities, just like a Scout Group, Cub Pack, or Explorer Unit might do. We definitely do our bit to help out, within Scouting and beyond, but that's not all we do. There's a lot more to Scout Network...
With our wide-ranging programme of activities, all led by our membership, we do far more than just visiting our local pubs. Hopefully the pictures around this website prove this for us, showing our members getting out and about to all kinds of events and taking part in lots of varied activities!
