Clubs

Students can join clubs at anytime during the school year. Students should listen to morning announcements about upcoming meeting dates.

Anime Club - Anime Club is dedicated to watching and discussing Japanese animation and culture, as well as playing anime inspired video games. Sponsor: Mr. Mertens How often do they meet: 4 times per month

Cappies - The Cappies critic and awards program allows student theater critics to travel to other schools in the area and write reviews of their theatrical productions. At the end of the year all of the critics vote on the best productions in the area, and winners are celebrated at an awards gala. Sponsor: Mr. Morris How often do they meet: 10-12 times per year

Class Committees - The class committee provides social opportunities for students that include, but aren't limited to Homecoming festivities, class dances/prom, and class trips. A wide variety of fundraising events is an integral part of class activities. The Senior Class supports the Senior variety show, pep rallies, and various events leading up to graduation (class breakfast, awards banquet, senior prom, class trip). Debate Club - Debate Club is a place where students can learn about different formats of debate (Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, and Parliamentary) and participate in local tournaments. We also offer Speech events such as poetry reading, impromptu, and dramatic interpretation. Sponsors: Mrs. Wessel and Mrs. Phelps How often do they meet: 2 times per month

Family, Career & Community Leaders of America- FCCLA is a national organization that provides leadership and service opportunities. It is open to all students at Sun Valley. There is a state wide conference every March to showcase your leadership and service projects. Sponsors: Mrs. Grady How often do they meet: every other week

GSA - This is Sun Valley's Gay Straight Alliance club, which is open to any student. Students have a safe space to discuss thoughts and feelings. The club participates in the Day of Silence, raises money for organizations affiliated with LGBTQ rights and works to make the school a more inclusive space. Sponsor: Mrs. Mal & Mr. Morris How often to they meet: once a week

Hi-Q - Hi-Q is an academic trivia competition. The team is given 14 subjects to study and we compete head to head against other teams from Delaware County. Sponsor: Mr. Kochersperger How often do they meet: once every two weeks

Math Honor Society Peer Tutoring - The Math Honors Society offers tutoring daily. Students will bring homework, classwork, or study guides to prepare for upcoming tests or quizzes. Peer tutoring takes place in the cafeteria during periods 1,2,3,7,8 and in the MIC during periods 4,5,6. After school peer tutoring on Tuesday's and Thursday's will take place in Ms. Kowalski's classroom (D91). Students don't need an appointment and can just show up for tutoring. Sponsors: Ms. Kowalski How often do they meet: Tutors are available every class period and available after school on Tuesday's and Thursday's in Room D91.

Motif - Motif is an electronic coffeehouse, where artists share poetry, short stories, essays, art, photography, anime, music, dance, film and any other artistic endeavor. Sponsor: Mr. Hill. How often do they meet: see Mr. Hill for a schedule

Art Club - art club is open to all Sun Valley students who are interested in creating art outside of the school day. This club is responsible for running Arts Alive, face painting events, craft nights, and other art related fundraisers. Students who wish to become a member of National Art Honor Society can also achieve this with completion of service hours and being in art club. Sponsors: Miss Willow, Mrs. Frei, Mr. Hartman How often do they meet: every Thursday

National Honor Society - Students who maintain a 4.0 weighted cumulative GPA are invited to fill out an application to become a member of the National Honor Society. The main focus is service and leadership projects. Students in the NHS run the Winter Formal and Volleyball Marathon as well as numerous other charity events and community events. Sponsors: Mrs. Buckmaster and Mr. McCormick How often do they meet: 1-2 times per month.

Peer Buddy - The mission of the Peer Buddy Program is to promote academic, behavioral, and social skills of differently-abled students and simultaneously break down barriers between students with and without disabilities through positive social interactions and age-appropriate activities. Sponsors: Mrs. Herbert and Mrs. Lehman How often do they meet: Once a month meeting and once a month planned activity

PIRC - Students go to the University of Pennsylvania for a day to learn about and work on problems related to a specific region chosen by the students of the PIRC group at U Penn. Sophomore to Seniors are welcome. Sponsors: Mrs. Buckmaster and Mr. McCormick How often do they meet: 1-2 times prior to the field trip in February

Reading Olympics - Students read books and participate in competitions with other school districts regarding the characters, content and themes of the books. Sponsors: Mrs. Smith and Mr. Graney How often do they meet: Once every 3 weeks

Science National Honor Society - The SNHS is comprised of students who have taken AP Biology and AP Chemistry. Sponsor: Mrs. Wiest How often do they meet: Tutors are available daily for peer tutoring and they meet monthly for meetings.

Science Olympiad - This is a nationally recognized competition program that allows students to test their abilities in biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and more. Sponsor: Mr. Nicholas & Mrs. Wiest How often do they meet: 2 times a week

Student Senate: The Student Senate runs and helps communicate about many school wide events. All class officers are members along with any other students who want to stay in the know and assist with various activities such as Homecoming, the Red Cross Blood Drive, Seat Belt Challenge, and others. Sponsor: Mr. Bowman

Sun Valley Robotics - The member of the club design, program, and build robots to compete in competitions with other schools across the state of Pennsylvania. Sponsors: Mr. Dobbins and Mr. Meenan How often do they meet: October through spring they meet twice per week, and sometimes more than that before a competition

Ultimate Frisbee - The Ultimate Frisbee club is the largest club at Sun Valley, and students from all grades and abilities level are welcome to join. Members will learn a lifelong activity and meet new people in a competitive , but friendly atmosphere. Sponsors: Mr. Baldys and Mr. Bowman How often do they meet: Every Wednesday from late November through early March

Valley Vogue - A club that designs and creates fashion. Sponsors: Mrs. Bednar and Mrs. Burns How often do they meet: 3-4 times per month

Vanguard Volunteers - Vanguard Volunteers is a community service club open to all students at Sun Valley. We collect blankets for the puppies at the SPCA, make cookies for the Crossing Guards, play Bingo at Fair Acres, staff an Alex's Lemonade Stand, and much more! In addition, CARING is an anti-bullying group that is included in the Vanguard Volunteers program. Sponsor: Mrs. Grady How often do they meet: Every other week

Variety Show - Variety Show showcases senior students' talents and comedic abilities for the Penn-Delco community. Sponsor: Ms. Greto How often do they meet: Practices start mid-September and go until the week before Thanksgiving.

Yearbook: The Sun Valley Spectrum - This organization works throughout the school to create the Annual Sun Valley Spectrum for all members of the community to enjoy. Students interested in photography, journalism, reporting and student activities would all enjoy this club. All grades are welcome to join at any time during the year. Sponsor: Mrs. Maxwell
