An automated system to produce high-quality, consistent Twisted and Coiled Actuators (TCAs) for advanced soft robotics applications.
The mission of the Automated Manufacturing of Twisted and Coiled Actuators (TCAs) project was to develop a versatile, automated system capable of producing high-quality actuators with precise control over critical manufacturing parameters. The goal was to enhance the consistency, efficiency, and scalability of TCA production for advanced applications in soft robotics, minimizing defects and enabling the creation of longer, more reliable actuators.
Defined precise requirements for an automated TCA manufacturing system, focusing on critical parameters like helical angle and twist distribution, ensuring the machine would consistently produce high-quality TCA's.
Utilized SolidWorks to design key mechanical components, including linear motion systems, incorporating detailed simulations to validate mechanical stability and performance.
Programmed an Arduino Mega to control stepper motors, integrating momentary buttons for various functions and a potentiometer to adjust motor speeds, enabling precise control of the twisting and coiling processes.
Assembled the machine using FDM 3D printing for various components, integrating SolidWorks-designed mechanical parts with electrical systems, ensuring precise alignment and synchronization.
