Simularites between Sumo and Collegiate wrestling are few but the arena in which they compete in is one of the main ones. The arenas, or rings, in which these two sports are played are very similar and the sports themselves also have similar characteristics. The two sports involve 2 wrestlers who start at opposite ends of the mat or ring at first. Another similar thing between these to is the use of weight classes in order to make the competition more fair. The main similarities between these 2 sports is the area type, or ring, and the involvement of martial arts in both sports.
Differences
One of the key differences is the objective of both Sumo and College wrestling. College wrestling in broken up into 3 periods with a total match time of 7 minutes. For the second and third period one of the opponents will begin in the offensive position and the other will be in the defensive position. As far as Sumo wrestling the rules are a little more simpler. The start of the match is called the initial charge where both wrestlers enter the ring at the same time. In simple terms the wrestlers who pushes the other outside of the ring first is the match winner which is decided by the referee. The main differences between these 2 sports is the match outline and the main objective of the sport.
Why is Sumo Wrestling Not Popular in the U.S.?
One of the main reasons that Sumo wrestling is not popular in the US is the simple fact that the culture behind Sumo has a heavy Japan decent. Most of the popular sports in the US have been created or have been played here for a long amount of time. Sumo wrestling is mainly done outside of the US in Japan so it is no surprise that this sport is not popular here or at least not yet. There has been attempts to popularize Sumo in the US and lately one Californian by the name of Andrew Freud has come up with the US Sumo Open. This is now the largest Sumo event outside of Japan so one would say that Sumo is on the rise here in America.
