Dr. German Rosas-Acosta, a tenured professor and founder of the SUMO Laboratory for Cellular and Molecular Biology, spent years studying the SUMOylation system and its role in how cells respond to stress, repair DNA, and regulate survival.
What began as fundamental scientific curiosity gradually revealed something profound. Cancer cells were exploiting this very system to survive chemotherapy. The more Dr. Rosas-Acosta and his team studied it, the clearer it became that targeting the SUMOylation pathway could be the key to overcoming one of oncology's greatest challenges: chemotherapy resistance.
On January 27, 2023, SUMOdulon, Inc. was officially incorporated with a single mission: to take this groundbreaking research out of the laboratory and turn it into real therapies that help real patients. The name SUMOdulon reflects the company's core focus, modulating the SUMO system to fight cancer.
The founding team believed that the best cancer therapies do not have to start from scratch. By working alongside existing chemotherapy agents rather than replacing them, SUMOdulon's approach offers a smarter, more targeted path forward for patients who need it most.
In 2024, SUMOdulon, Inc. entered the Elevate Health Tech Challenge, a competitive program designed to accelerate promising health technology startups. The team presented their vision, their science, and their pipeline to a panel of industry judges. They won, securing $20,000 in seed funding to advance Phase 1 laboratory studies.
That win was more than money. It was validation. Independent experts in health technology recognized what the team had known for years. SUMOdulon's approach to chemotherapy resistance was not just scientifically sound, but commercially compelling.
