RENEWABLE ENERGIES
Chair: Pr Nouar TABET (UAE)
Program Description:
Solar Energy has become the cheapest source of energy in history (0.0104$/kWh). Many recent studies indicate that up to 50 percent of the world’s energy will come from solar and wind by 2050 (BP-Energy Outlook, 2020). The energy transition from fossil fuels to solar and other alternative renewable resources is unavoidable. The current production capacity of solar installations in Algeria does not exceed 0.5GW. However, the country is planning to lauch 1GW PV project in 2021 and reach up to 22GW of renewable energies (RE) by 2030, 60% of which from solar resource. Many universities offer Master programs in RE and a Higher National School of Renewable Energy, Environment & Sustainable Development has been established in Batna in 2020. In this context, a summer university focused on the analysis of the challenges facing the large scale deployment of solar energy in Algeria is a timely event that will address the major issues of interest to graduate students, engineers and researchers working in the field. The AAF 2021 session will cover the whole value chain of PV Technology as well as a review of the Energy Storage Technologies. It will also give an insight on the solar industry and the trends in the RE market. The list of invited speakers includes wellknown researchers from universities in Europe and Asia and experts from the industry. The covered topics are the following :
• Introduction to PV Technology ( overview of the topics to be covered by different speakers)
• Silicon Technology : Si Growth, Cell and Panel fabrication, Panel reliability under desert climate, LCA
• Connection to the Grid: BOS, Power Control
• Solar applications :
• Energy Storage technollohgies: Li(Na, S) Batteries, Green hydrogen,...
• Trends and Challenges in the PV Market
Desired Learning Outcomes:
Participants will learn about the main solar technologies from the cell fabrication and testing to the design of PV panels , the analysis of their performance and the injection of RE in the grid. They will learn the main approaches used to control and optimize RE systems and become familiar with the the large scale applications of solar energy. The will get introduced to Storage technologies including various types of dry batteries and green hydrogen. Participants will learn about the key current challenges and trends of the RE market.
Who Should Attend the Course ?
Faculty members and graduate students interested or working in the field of renewable energies, materials sciences, engineers, economists, information technology personnel who deal with any aspects of RE technologies, planning and operation. Technical staff of Sonelgaz and energy companies could also benefit from this course.
