ADVANCED COMPUTING

"Fueling New Trends in Computing

with Advances in Foundational Computer Science"

Chair: Dr Mourad CHERFAWI (USA)

The Computer Science track of the 2021 AAF summer university will bring back the popular lectures that were presented last year: Artificial Intelligence including Deep and Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, and Cyber Security including applications in the Internet of Things. These new and recent trends in Computing leverage advances in existing foundational computer science areas such as algorithms, operating systems, networking and distributed systems, databases, and hardware. The summer university will have a good balance of new and traditional with a focus on how advances in foundational computer science enable the more recent trends in computing.

The Artificial Intelligence lectures expand on the digital disruption that it introduces and how companies must prepare for it now. We already see real-life benefits for a few early adopting firms in Silicon Valley, making it more urgent than ever for others to accelerate their digital transformations. The focus will be on AI technologies: Data science, Computer Vision, Language and Machine Learning, and Deep Learning and how they underpin many recent advances in the other AI technologies

The Cloud Computing lectures go in detail into the ecosystem that makes the power of computing systems virtually available to anyone and for any application including Artificial Intelligence. This is explored from both the service provider side (the entity that makes the computing systems available) as well as the consumer side.

Powerful computer systems and applications are often a target for hackers and malicious actors in general. The cyber-security lectures cover this domain in depth. Examples of the top threats in the wild as well as Network Intrusion Detection systems are presented.

Obviously, none of the computing areas listed would be possible without the underlying foundational computer science paradigms. The computer science track of the 2021 AAF summer university devotes a good place to advances in foundational computer science topics such as Distributed Systems and Networks, Operating Systems, Databases and High-Performance Computing.

The lecturers come from different backgrounds and are academic or industry leaders in their respective fields. Beside the US, this year, we have added lecturers from France and Qatar. The lecturers will guide and assist participants working in academia, research centers, IT, networking, internet and media companies, and high-tech startups to develop their skills. The lecturers will also explore the possibility of building a network of researchers and practicing engineers in various fields in Algeria and abroad to consider future collaborative projects and initiatives.

It’s our hope that participants in science track of the 2021 AAF summer university will get exposed to the latest technologies and learn theoretical and practical knowledge on diverse relevant aspects of computer science, artificial intelligence including deep learning and machine learning, cloud computing, cyber security, system performance and database.
