Training gives everyone a great understanding of their responsibilities, the knowledge and skills they need to do that job. This will enhance their confidence which can also improve their overall performance. Training allows units to acquire new skills, sharpen existing ones, perform better, increase productivity and be better leaders. Since a department is the sum total of what units achieve individually, departments should do everything in their power to ensure that units perform at their peak.

Summersville Volunteer Fire Department uses strategic training. Strategic training is a form of training that, according to a department's strategic planning, values and goals, provides units with the necessary tools and information required to complete their tasks successfully.
