ACM SIGCHI is increasing its engagement with practitioners and researchers from Asian developing countries. Based on this motivation, it set up an Asian Development Committee in 2016, and has already organized a significant number of conferences in Asia, and also in Asian developing countries. CHI and CSCW conferences are the top-notch conferences in the field of HCI.
CHI Conference
The ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems is the premier international conference of Human-Computer Interaction. Here researchers and practitioners gather from across the world to discuss the latest in interactive technology. It is a multicultural community from highly diverse backgrounds who together investigate and design new and creative ways for people to interact using technology.
CSCW Conference
CSCW focuses on the technologies that affect groups, organizations, communities, and networks. It also explores the social, technical, and theoretical challenges of designing technology to support collaborative work and life activities.
In the anticipation of upcoming CHI and CSCW, we plan to organize the Virtual Summer School (due to COVID-19 outbreak it was postponed in March 2020) and follow-up activities in the month of June 2020 in Bangladesh. This Summer School will be a continuation of June-July Summer Schools and November Winter School of How to Write a Paper for CHI 2021 that held in India, China, and Bangladesh as well. The objective of this Summer school is a bit different than the previous events. We want to support and encourage young researchers, practitioners and research students from Asia (more focus to global south) to understand the research methodologies that will help in getting into new research design and new researches relevant to CHI and CSCW.
We hope to achieve this by facilitating the following activities:
- Follow-up virtual bi-monthly group discussion to peer review the ongoing research work
- Mentoring sessions by widely-established researchers
- In-depth communication on Research Methodologies among local researchers
The participants will get an opportunity to design new research or discuss their new research projects through the event. Participants can have several opportunities to get feedback from peers and mentors.
We aim to attract participants all around the globe. Through the SIGCHI development fund, we aim to support students and educators, practitioners interested in HCI. The selection process for allocating the student scholarships will be juried and based on the student’s CV and letter of motivation. We try to reach out to the participants who conduct research in this space but who do not traditionally participate in summer/winter schools, with a particular emphasis on practitioners and researchers.
