Located in downtown Summerland in Memorial Park, our cenotaph honours the fallen of both World Wars and Korea.
The names of the servicemen and women who paid the ultimate price are listed on the north side facing town. When the population of Summerland was about than 1600 in 1914, the 36 men and one female nurse named on the cenotaph perished in Europe. Several others are not named, the reasons for this remain unclear.
In the Second World War, 24 did not return from a population of less than 2000.
Update January 2025
The Cenotaph will be moved to its new home at the new entrance plaza south of Henry Ave.
The Summerland Legion has applied for a grant from the Commemorative Partnership Program to help with the cost.
Paul and Eunice Randall have done the research to ensure the plaques are complete and accurate.
All names already on the Cenotaph will remain for historical record other than changes to misspelt names.
The criteria agreed to are the following:
- The Fallen live or worked in Summerland.
- The parents of the Fallen lived in Summerland.
- The Fallen were former residents of Summerland. This includes those who were students of Okanagan College and those that worked in Summerland prior to WW1.
- Summerland soldiers who died post-war.
- Their deaths in their military files are recorded as attributed to military service.
- The family received the Memorial plaque and their mother and/or wife the Memorial Cross.
