In 1919 – Veterans of the First World War formed Great War Veterans Association and Branch #22 was formed. They received their charter in 1919.
Their early meetings were held in the Parish hall of the Anglican Church; until building the first Legion Hall in 1928. It was in use until destroyed by fire July 1961. The present Legion Hall was built and opened in October 1961. Improvements have included changing bar status: putting in fire door with a ramp and doors for easier access, new floors and carpeting. In the 1970's the Rosedale Room was added, along with the stage, kitchen, office and board room.
The Ladies Auxiliary was formed and received their Charter March 3, 1927. They held early meetings in member’s homes and used the Parish hall until the opening of the first Legion Hall. Money for Ladies Auxiliary activities has been raised by raffles, tea, bake sales and more recently by catering, 50/50 draws and Pie Nights.
In the early years the Branch hosted a Christmas party for Veterans children, a big event with upwards of 80-100 children having a fun afternoon and Santa Claus paying a visit!
One of the most unique projects the Ladies Auxiliary has are Aluminum Crosses placed on every Veterans grave in the 3 Summerland cemeteries begun in 1958 and to date we have placed 384. No charge to the deceased’s family. Ladies Auxiliary puts them in place. On the Sunday closest to VE Day, every Veteran's grave is marked overnight with a candle. There are 25 in Peach Orchard Cemetery, 72 in the Old Anglican Church Cemetery on Giants Head Road. Canyon View Cemetery, the current site, has 312. It is a very moving sight after dark.
Our present membership is: Branch - 830 & Ladies Auxiliary - 58. We have paid staff, with many volunteers working in various functions.
