SCA General Info and Questions

What is the PUHSD Competency Based

Summer Academy (SCA)?

Every School Site: Classes will be offered at each of the 4 comprehensive school sites in PUHSD- Del Oro, Placer, Colfax, and Foresthill.

      • Subjects offered at each site will be dependent on need and teacher availability.

Individualized Plans: Each student will have an individualized plan based on their specific learning needs.

      • Some students may need to be in the same class for all of June while others may be able to finish one class and begin another.

Competency-Based: In this model, most students won't have to repeat the entire course.

      • Students will get "credit" for areas that they already demonstrated mastery in during the school year.

      • For example, an Integrated 1 Math student earned a 56% in the class in the fall and passed (C- or better) 6 out of the 10 required ELO's (Essential Learning Outcomes) for the course. The student will only need to focus on and pass the 4 ELO's they didn't pass during the school year.

Ability to Finish Early: As soon as the teacher determines that a student has proven mastery in all required areas (ELO's) the student will be done with their summer school course (that might only take a few days, 1 week, or the full 4 weeks).

Other Q&A

If we are going on vacation can my child miss some of SCA?

  • Ideally, students will attend each day of SCA until they complete the course.

  • Because of the competency-based and individualized nature of the SCA, although not ideal, it is possible for a student to miss a small portion of the 4-week program and still complete the course(s). It all depends on how much of the course the student needs to complete and the rate at which they progress.

Is it possible to take multiple classes?

  • Yes. The schedule is designed for two blocks each day. Depending on need, a student may focus only on one course for both blocks or take one course each block.

Who can take these SCA classes?

  • The first priority will be 9th and 10th-grade students who earned a D/F or I (Incomplete) for Fall 2021 or Spring 2022

  • Depending on availability, SCA may open up to 11th-grade students who received a D/F or I as well.

Can my child take the bus?

  • Bussing is not available this summer.

What if my child doesn't finish or pass their SCA classes?

  • Each teacher and school site will determine a plan for students who do not pass or complete their SCA classes.

Will there be an online/virtual option for my child to participate from home?

  • No. Students will be required to be in-person at their school site.

Can my student be removed from SCA?

  • Yes, when you register, both you and your student will be asked to confirm that you have read and understand the SCA rules and expectations. If a student does not follow the rules/expecations of the teacher and/or SCA, they may be removed from participation.

What if my child has supports such as an IEP or 504?

  • Students with a IEP or 504 will be identified and supported.
