We conducted settlement studies in Jamnagar, Gujarat, where we analyzed the village's layout and development. The study began with an walkthrough of the village, engaging with residents to gain insights. Subsequently, we were divided into groups: Village Plan, Landscape, Settlements, Economy, and Social Structure. I was part of the Village Planning group, focusing on the spatial organization and structural aspects of the settlement.
Our mapping team created a village map manually, without using Google Maps. We started by mapping the roads and then added settlements and vegetation. To get accurate proportions, we used a step-counting method. One team member would walk and count steps, while another would sketch the layout and mark landmarks. This way, we developed a basic map of the village on day two. Later we refined this map which became the base of our further plans.

Next, we added houses to the map, which was challenging due to varying house sizes and densities. We used the step-counting method again to ensure accuracy. This process took the most time, especially in narrow lanes or areas with no houses. Despite the challenges, we successfully mapped the village, including settlements and vegetation, to reflect the actual site.

After returning from Gujarat, we combined the data from each group to create a comprehensive drawing. This visual summary showcased the village's settlements, economy, landscape, and people, giving us a holistic view. We learned how different aspects of life influence people's lifestyles and settlements.
