Captain A. Gutierrez

Senior Marine Instructor (SMI)

Bio:

    Captain Gutierrez is a native of Mexico. He Graduated high school in 1995 and immediately enlisted in the Marine Corps. He attended Boot Camp at MCRD, San Diego. After graduation, he reported to Marine Combat Training, Camp Pendleton, California. He then proceeded to Fort Lee, Virginia for Bulk Fuel Specialist School. In January of 1996, then Lance Corporal Gutierrez reported to MWSS-372, Camp Pendleton where he moved up the enlisted ranks until reaching the rank of Sergeant. In 1998, he deployed with the 11th MEU aboard the USS Tarawa, and participated in Operation Southern Watch, Operation Safe Departure, and Operation Desert Thunder. 

    In 1999, Sergeant Gutierrez made a lateral move to Helicopter Mechanic and reported to HMLA-367 and completed a six-month unit deployment to Okinawa, Japan. In March 2001, Sgt Gutierrez received orders to Drill Instructor School, MCRD San Diego. He completed 11 cycles, in which he held several different billets including, Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, Series Chief Drill Instructor and Routing Chief. While at MCRD, he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. In August 2004, SSgt Gutierrez applied for and was selected to the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Program (MECEP). Upon completion of the MECEP School, he enrolled at San Diego State University. In February 2007 he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant and Completed Officer Candidate’s School in August of that same year. In May of 2009, he graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with Magna Cum Laude honors. Upon graduation he received his commission to Second Lieutenant. In June 2009, 2ndLt Gutierrez attended The Basic School, on Quantico, Virginia. Upon graduation, he received orders to the Military Police Officer Basic Leadership Course in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. In June 2010 he received orders to Military Police Company, HQ BN, 1st Marine Division Camp Pendleton. 

    In December 2011, 2ndLt Gutierrez reported to 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, Police Mentor Team-1 on a IA billet from Division MP Company. He held the billet of Police Advisor Team Executive Officer for the Afghan National Police. Shortly after arriving in Afghanistan 2ndLt Gutierrez was assigned his own team and became the Commander for Police Advisor Team 3; responsible for advising, mentoring, and training the Afghan National Civil Order Police. While on deployment he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Upon return from his combat deployment, 1stLt Gutierrez reported back to Military Police Company, HQ BN, 1st Marine Division, where he served as platoon commander and Company Executive Officer. In March 2012, 1stLt Gutierrez received orders to 1st Law Enforcement Battalion. In that same month he was awarded the 2011 Jim Kallstrom award for leadership at the 2012 Senior Leaders Security Conference. 1stLt Gutierrez helped establish the newly formed Law Enforcement Battalion and was frocked to the rank of Captain in June 2012. He served as company commander until May 2013. Capt Gutierrez was selected from the Commandants Career Level Education Board to attend the Military Police Captain’s Career Course (MPCCC) at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He finished his time with 1st Law Enforcement battalion as the Assistant S-3 until he executed orders in October.

    From November 2013 until May 2014 Captain Gutierrez attended MPCCC in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he graduated in the top 5% percent of the class and earned a place on The Commandants List for Career Course 01-14. After graduation Capt Gutierrez executed orders to Okinawa, Japan where he served as the Services Officer for the Provost’ Marshals Office, Camp Foster. Captain Gutierrez executed orders in July 2015 back to California. In July 2015, Captain Gutierrez reported to the G-3 Operations Division with I Marine Expeditionary Force. During his three-year tour he deployed several times in support of Balikatan, Pacific Horizon, Oman and other operations. Captain Gutierrez served as the Senior Watch Officer in the MEF Operations Center through several MEF level and Joint Task Force {JTF) exercises. He also performed the duties as a Law Enforcement and Integrations Officer. In July 2018, Captain Gutierrez received orders to MCRD San Diego, where he retired after 24 years of service.  

    Captain Gutierrez’s personal awards and decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal 3rd award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal 3rd award, Good Conduct Medal 4th award, Sea Service Deployment 3rd Award, Overseas Deployment Ribbon, and Drill Instructor Ribbon.

    Captain Gutierrez is married to Grace and they have two sons, Michael 25 (who is also a Marine) and Adrian II age 16. His hobbies include golf, basketball, and traveling.


Gunnery Sergeant R. Talon 

Marine Instructor (MI)

Bio:

Gunnery Sergeant Talon enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 2002. He attended Boot Camp at

MCRD, Parris Island. He then proceeded to Marine Combat Training, Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Upon

graduation he attended the Personnel Administration School, Camp Johnson, North Carolina. He was

then assigned to the Heavy Marine Helicopter Squadron HMH-365, Miramar Air Station, San Diego. In

2003, he was deployed to Okinawa, Japan as part of the Unit Deployment Program, where he was

promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. In 2004, he deployed to Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi

Freedom, where he was promoted meritoriously to the rank of Corporal. In 2006, he again deployed to

Iraq in Support of Iraqi Freedom, where he was combat meritoriously promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

In 2007, Gunnery Sergeant Talon made a lateral move to Career Planning and reported to Combat

Logistics Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California, where he deployed to Iraq, in Support of Operation Iraqi

Freedom. In 2010, Gunnery Sergeant deployed to Afghanistan, in Support of Operation Enduring

Freedom, where he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was then transferred to 1st

Battalion 9th Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and deployed to Afghanistan once more. In 2013,

Gunnery Sergeant Talon volunteered for a special duty assignment. As part of the Marine Security

Guard, he served as the Detachment Commander for the U.S. Embassy in Djibouti, Djibouti and in Tel

Aviv, Israel. Upon completion of the special duty assignment, he was assigned to 3rd Battalion 5th

Marines, Camp Pendleton, California, where he deployed as part of the 11th and 31st Marine

Expeditionary Units. In 2019, Gunnery Sergeant Talon was promoted to the current rank and was

transferred to Combat Logistics Regiment 1. In 2021, he was transferred to the 6th Marine Regiment,

Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he served until, he retired in November 2022.

Gunnery Sergeant Talon’s awards and decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps

Commendation Medal 2nd award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal 4th award, Combat

Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal 6th award, and Marine Security Guard Ribbon.

Gunnery Sergeant is married to Elena. His hobbies include traveling, reading, and physical fitness.
