Prior to conducting any research on Heroin, the group is knowledgeable on a few aspects of the substance. For starters, the group understands how harmful Heroin is when used, specifically in unsanitary conditions. One member of our group shared that a family member contracted Hepatitis C subsequently after using contaminated needles. Additionally, the group has gathered an immense amount of information on how an opioid, like Heroin, negatively impacts one’s psychological function and well-being when consistent usage is present, especially in that of an under-developed brain. In our English class, we have had to compile notes from various guest speakers and the DEA. The opioid drug class is a topic discussed quite frequently, enabling us to utilize the information gathered during presentations to enrich our project
Heroin
What substance from the list would you like to research? Why?
Our group is preferential to researching Heroin due to two of our group members disseminating their personal experiences with losing a loved one due to an overdose on Heroin. Additionally, orchestrating a project around Heroin enables us to procure newfound knowledge while educating our community on the substance. Moreover, the individuals of our group who have had to undergo the loss of a family member are passionate about assimilating further information on Heroin, valuing the opportunity to indoctrinate themselves, and the community on the substance that victimized their loved ones. Furthermore, the two members who have had family members impacted by Heroin possess supplemental knowledge on the substance; knowledge that can be incorporated into our project. Lastly, our mission is to impart a quality education on how Heroin impacts one’s community, psychological and physical health, family, and performance at school, work, and sports.

Lastly, our group is zealous about raising awareness for Substance Abuse Disorder due to it being an illness that impacts a colossal amount of individuals nationwide.

Preceding any research on alcohol, our group is knowledgeable on how the substance can impact one’s physical health. To begin, alcohol over time will mutilate the liver, ultimately causing liver failure. However, liver failure is not the only major health concern alcohol exhibits. In addition to provoking liver failure, alcohol can also cause strokes, high blood pressure, liver cancer, and damage to the voice box. Our group is also conscious of the substantial number of individuals in the United States who are in an ongoing battle with alcohol addiction.
What substance from the list is your 2nd choice? Why?
Alcohol is the substance our group nominated to be our second choice due to how widespread and underestimated the substance is. In the United States, any adult over the age of 21 possesses the ability to legally purchase an alcoholic beverage. However, a lot of individuals are often blindsided, not realizing the alarming threat alcohol poses. Alcohol, just like an opioid, causes the brain to stop producing natural dopamine. Once natural dopamine production is halted, an individual will endure a series of acute, gruesome side effects if an attempt to discontinue usage of the substance is made. Around the United States, an abundance of individuals struggle or watch a loved one battle an alcohol dependence. By researching alcohol, the group hopes to provide others with an adequate education and cognizance on the threat alcohol poses.
Why is this substance relevant or significant to you?
Alcohol is a substance of relevance in our group as a result of two members disclosing that they have had loved ones struggle with an alcohol dependence in the past, and how its taken a toll on the person with the SUD as well as the people and environment around them.
What do you hope to learn about this substance?
As our research on alcohol commences, the group aspires to enrich our knowledge of how alcohol impacts the various body systems. Additionally, our group would like to grasp what happens to an individual’s brain during an alcohol addiction. Some questions our group aims to answer by the end of the project include: what parts of the brain are impacted to the greatest extent? Can an individual recover from brain damage caused by alcohol?
What do you already know about this substance? What prior knowledge do you have?
Our group has already acquired a fundamental understanding of Fentanyl due to our field trip to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and numerous guest speaker presentations. For starters, our group is knowledgeable on how powerful and murderous fentanyl is. According to a presentation given by William Derno of Say San Diego, the minimum amount of fentanyl that can kill a human being is as little as two milligrams. Moreover, our group is also aware that Fentanyl can come in various forms such as a pill or a powder. While on our field trip at the DEA, our group learned that the individuals responsible for manufacturing the product, use blenders to do so. However, a blender doesn’t evenly distribute fentanyl within the substance. To set the stage, two individuals unintentionally purchase a pill containing fentanyl and decide to split it. However, as a result of the pill being assembled in a blender, one side of the pill is infused with fentanyl while the other is not.The two outcomes will be vastly different. To bring closure, the group is informed on fentanyl being a synthetic opioid. Synthetic opioids are substances manufactured in laboratories to replicate a natural product.
What substance from the list is your 3rd choice? Why?
Lastly, our group pronounced Fentanyl as our third substance due to the ongoing, worsening Fentanyl crisis in the United States. Researching Fentanyl supplies us with an opportunity to not only procure knowledge on the substance, but also educate our community on how peril Fentanyl is. The objective of our group scrutinizing fentanyl is to illuminate how detrimental the substance is, while also educating ourselves in the process. Although developing our knowledge and educating others is a key component, our group is also passionate about accentuating the rising number of Fentanyl victims, that a vast majority of those same victims took the substance inadvertently.
Why is this substance relevant or significant to you?
Fentanyl is a substance that is befitting for our group due to a member bringing to our attention that one of their loved ones became a victim of fentanyl due to it being masked as a prescription pill. Additionally, another member of the group shared that one of their loved ones was a stone’s throw away from consuming a substance laced with fentanyl. As a whole, the group believes that both stories are prime examples of the raging Fentanyl crisis. Fentanyl is a vigorous, deleterious substance that is on the rise; harming more individuals with every hour of everyday that elapses. Why is this substance relevant or significant to you?
What do you hope to learn about this substance?
When the Sugar to Heroin project concludes, our group aims to have soaked up more information on the specific body systems fentanyl damages, as well develop our knowledge on the areas of the brain it impacts. By the end of the project, our group aims to answer the following questions: if one doesn’t overdose on Fentanyl, how does it impact one’s psychological health? Does the fact that Fentanyl is much stronger than a “regular” opioid make a difference in side effects one experiences?
