The United States, the country we live in, is currently in a worsening crisis. A crisis which is killing more individuals with everyday which elapses. Due to the crisis, our group felt it was important to note some of the current published data in relation to our substance, alcohol.
The chart demonstrates the relationship between unintentional prescription drug, heroin, and alcohol caused deaths in San Diego County as of 2021.
The overlapping within the chart represents the number of individuals who were found to have had one or more of the substances in their systems.
Death Data
In the table, the total count of unintentional deaths caused by Drugs (Prescription and Illicit), and/or alcohol is presented.
In 2017, 552 individuals died unintentionally at the hands of substances. As of 2021, that number has tragically doubled.
In 2019, 50.8% of individuals 12-13 had reported alcohol usage.
In the 14 - 15 age range, about 7.3% reported alcohol usage in 2019. However, that number spikes upwards in the 16-17 age range at 19.3%.
Death Data
In 2020, the percentage of individuals who had died of an alcohol related overdose was 17%.
In 2021, the percentage of individuals who had died of an alcohol related overdose was 19%.
While the individuals recorded in the percentages could have had other substances present in their systems, alcohol was involved in some way for every individual.
