I have been fortunate to meet great people in all my ESL adult classes. The learners are friendly and they try their best at whatever I give them.
Certainly, I adjust my instructions and course content to try to meet their needs. Nevertheless, it is never perfect. There are those that find it challenging or not enough. It can be frustrating but this is not enough to throw in the towel. I've learned to accept it but that doesn't mean you can't do something about it. I show videos, gestures, and pictures to help build understanding. I spent a lot of time cutting pictures and words for learners to review vocabulary. It serves as an easy break for students - away from all the 'academicness'.
Today's lesson as an instructor, consider the question:
No matter how much you wanted to teach everything, it is better to consolidate the important concepts - what is necessary. I've taught a lot of vocabulary today and not enough speaking opportunities for students. For my next class, I will combine what is needed and apply it to topics.
