Sugar Loaf's first European settlers appear to have arrived in the 18th century, easily guided to the "Sugar Loaf Valley" by the then-forested promontory known as "Shugar Loafe" . These first settlers hailed from Ireland, and are very likely to have named our eponymous mountain due to its eerie similarity to several "Sugar Loaf" mountains back in their home nation.
