Sueno Mexicano Ink
I began working on the idea of opening up a tattoo studio in IV since September 2023 and finally made it happen in January 2024. I wanted to open up a space that could not only honor my grandparents, who practically raised me and are the motivation behind everything I do, but also to function as a "third space" for other Latino students to utilize. As of right now, it's still a small space, but the idea is to eventually expand.
When I first came to UCSB, I felt out of place in a space that appeared to be predominately white and found it difficult to make space for myself or find a sense of community with people who shared similar cultures, experiences, etc. I drew from concepts and inspirations from classes during my first quarter back at UCSB as I was trying to navigate how to open up my business. Since opening the studio. I have had to learn how to balance school and work while also maintaining a healthy personal life.
Why Sueno Mexicano?
Growing up, my grandpa in particular instilled and inspired a strong work ethic in me, something that is very prominent in the Mexican culture. He once told me that I needed to do well in school and go to college to get a good paying job so I wouldn't have to work "like a dog" like he did. My grandpa dropped out of school in 4th grade to help take care of his family as he worked in the factories and went on to work in construction the rest of his life. Needless to say, I thought he would be furious when I dropped out of UCSB, but he offered the most support when I decided to pursue tattooing.
My grandpa was able to achieve the "American Dream" as he worked his way up in life and built a family and home for himself, but at what cost? The myth of the American Dream has haunted my family and the lives of other Latinos who attempt to achieve the impossible. Though it may feel like an insult to want to live a life where I simply want to enjoy my work because I am passionate about it and not solely for survival, it is a privilege that I have worked for and continue to strive for.
On a more straightforward note, I wanted to make my space as open and comfortable as possible. I've always had my own reservations when it comes to going to tattoo shops because of the overt masculine energy and they can often be scary, demeaning, overwhelming, etc. I like to make my clients feel as comfortable as possible and have you take charge of the appointment. I am simply providing a service for you and you are in charge of your own bodily autonomy and sense of agency here at Sueno Mexicano Ink which often lacks in many tattoo shops based on the experiences many of my clients have told me of.
