Viewpoint and Angles

Practicing Angle Shots

Newbie photographers typically shoot straight on and then move to the next picture opportunity. The first shot is usually not the best and often we need to try a variety of angles to get the more interesting shot.

Goal: Show an object from 16 different viewpoints

1. Read through this presentation on angles.

2. Find an interesting object (bike, guitar, plant, etc) to photograph. Spend 10 minutes photographing it from 16 completely different viewpoints.

3. Shoot from above, below, extremely close up, very far away, and so on. You have 11 more viewpoints to shoot from. Move your feet, move your camera and think of every possible perspective.

4. The requirement is to capture 16 unique angles of the same subject.

5. Put 6-9 of them onto a collage using PicCollage or your phone. Watch these YouTube videos which show you how to do this: Phone collage, PicCollage app.

6. Finally, edit the collage using Snapseed or your phone. You could turn them all black and white or tinker with the saturation and contrast to make the colours pop out. You can use your mobile phone or the free Snapseed app to edit. Editing after putting them in a collage is much quicker.

Shoot a Shoe

During this assignment you will create an advertisement like collage of your favourite shoes. Imagine some counterfeiter will be using your images to create an exact copy of the shoe, so details are important. Your assignment is to shoot a shoe from 25 different angles, edit them either in a contrasty black and white or bright and colorful edit and be consistent with all your editing so all your pictures look the same. For this assignment, you are going to demonstrate your ability to take pictures from many different angles of a shoe.

  1. Choose your favorite shoe, a well-worn shoe, a colorful shoe, or a friends, but it has to be a shoe.

  2. Take a total of 25 DIFFERENT pictures of the same shoe.

  3. Look for different angles and perspectives on the shoe.

  4. GET CLOSE and get creative with the shoe! FILL YOUR FRAME!

  5. Choose a well-lit area and make sure the background is not cluttered, which may cause a distraction from the shoe. You can even make a little studio with paper or a sheet to use as your backdrop.

  6. **Always tap the screen to lock your focus**

  7. Put 15-20 of your photos onto a collage using PicCollage or your phone. Watch these YouTube videos which show you how to do this: Phone collage, PicCollage app.

  8. **Be creative with your design!**

  9. Go back to Google classroom and turn in your collage of shoe photographs.

3d Text Editing

For this project I want you take one of your photos of your shoes that you took in the last assignment above and follow the youtube tutorial to add the name of the brand to your photo. If your shoes does not have a brand name, you can add your name to the shoe.

  1. Shoes your favourite shoe shot from the last assignment. One showing the laces is quite good for this.

  2. Make sure you edit the image BEFORE you add text to it. You could turn is black and white or tinker with the contrast and saturation to make the colours pop out. You can use your mobile phone or the free Snapseed app to edit.

  3. Then watch the following YouTube video which will show you how to add and edit text using Snapseed:

4. Go back to Google classroom and turn in your edited image.
