It is surprisingly difficult to define exactly what qualifies a building as Cape Dutch. Most have an ornate central gable... but not all. Most have sliding sash windows... but a few have side-hung windows... most are single story, but some have a loft. Most are white... but some are painted beige. It is this very exception to the rule nature of these homes that makes them so fascinating as they defy categorization. .... and then there is the modern version. This darling home has a very vertically proportioned gable that is emphasized by a protruding middle portion in the neoclassical tradition. Go to PLOTSFORSALECAPETOWN For more on this home.
This design can be described as soft, with its rounded moldings well above the top of the windows and a rather "frilly" sort of gable, with very small cottage pane windows. See CAPETOWNSPLENDOUR for more information.
This very bold, very large neoclassical gable has a very decisive shape and is notably without any urns. The niche with statue is instead its decorative element. Worthy of it's fame, image courtesy of ARCHITECTCAPEDUTCH, the most official Cape Dutch website.
The most beautiful Cape Dutch manor home of all - the farmhouse at ZEVENWACHT has been turned into a restaurant and is a popular wedding venue. The window panes with large panes are unusual for the period and are probably not the original ones. The use of both green and white on the fenestration creates interest. The plaster architrave above the door is a great choice compared to the heavy wooden one at Groot Constantia. See GLITZYMAGAZINE for more glitz and glamour in Cape Town.
