I had originally planned to only go to school for 4 years (2 years at community college and 2 years at a state college) but that plan was halted when I was told I would graduate late if I decided to study abroad. Graphic design classes at Western Carolina University were only offered every other semester, so missing a single class would push me back a year. I had already graduated high school late due to my chronic illness IBS (along with other health problems) and I vowed to never put myself in a situation where my graduation was hindered. I decided to put a seemingly impossible condition for me to study abroad; only go if the trip was free. I figured if I could not afford the trip then it was out of my hands and I would not feel too guilty about it. I got all my documents filled out with my study abroad advisor, got my passport, and submitted anything that was required. After that, I applied for a single scholarship which was the Gilman scholarship and simply waited for a rejection so I could continue with my semester.
A couple weeks later, I was met with 5 missed calls from my study abroad advisor and this message sitting in my email. My entire trip was now paid for. To say I was surprised was an understatement. I was pretty terrified about how I was going to survive with all my health problems in a foreign country. Given that everything was paid for and I fulfilled the condition I gave myself, I sucked it up and decided to got through with it. I was glad that the school I picked was open to accommodating students with health problems. I went ahead and bought my plane ticket and planned for a trip to my nearest Japanese embassy.
