THE UNITED KINGDOM        

The United Kindom is four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The United Kindom has got a flag. The Union Jack is a combination of the flags for the three saints of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland: St George, St Andrew and St Patrick.

ENGLAND

The capital of England (and the UK) is London. It's in the South East and it's on the River Thames. London is a very old city. It's from Roman times. London is very big and the population is about 9 million. The English flag is red and white. It's called St George's Cross. St George is the patron saint of England. His feast day is on 23 April.

SCOTLAND

The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. It isn't a big city and it's population is about 500,000. It's an ancient city and it's very popular with tourists. The Scottish flag is blue and white. It's called the Saltire or St Andrew's Cross. The patron saint of Scotland is St Andrew.

WALES

The capital of Wales is Cardiff. It's a small city and it's population is about 300, 000. The two languages in Wales are English and Welsh. The Welsh word for Wales is Cymru. Cardiff is famous for its castle. The Welsh flag is green and white with a red dragon. The Welsh flag isn't in the Union Jack. The patron saint of Wales is St David.

NORTHERN IRELAND

Ireland is a island with two countries on it. Northern Ireland is in the north, and it's part of the United Kingdom. Its capital, Belfast, isn't a big city and its population is about 300,00. Its flag is white with a red diagonal cross. It's called the Saltire if St Patrick. St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland
