Project Description

For this project, I am describing the impact social media has on students and society as a whole. 

Social Media Addiction Survey

My results from the “Am I ADDICTED to social media?” quiz concluded that I have a healthy relationship with social media. I feel as though this quiz was only partially accurate because of the limited questions they ask. Despite not interacting on multiple platforms, I do use 1-2 platforms daily. I feel as though it can be improved by asking more detailed questions such as screen time usage and how user interact on certain platforms. For example, "How often do you post or comment on other people's posts?"

Social Media Statistic

According to Pew Research Center, majority of 18-29 year old use Instagram (71%) and Snapchat (65%) as their primary social media platforms. About half of the people in this same age group use TikTok (55%). I think this is very interesting because those aged 65+ hardly use Snapchat (2%)as a social media platform. The way social media is used among different age groups is very intriguing. From what it seems, older age groups seem to feel most comfortable and use social media platforms that are older. I chose this statistic because it relates to how my parents and I use social media to interact. My mother primarily uses Facebook as her social media platform and I use TikTok as my main social media platform. Both of us can't seem to enjoy the other and I think this has a lot to do with comfortability and familiarity.

Impact on Society

Social media affects society in so many ways, positive and negative. Social media is a way of communicating, spreading news, and informing. Despite many well-intentioned news outlets, there is also a lot of fake news, misinforming millions. There is preaching of love and spreading positivity on the internet as well as hate and harassment. Social media impacts us in more ways than just emotional; we lose sleep over fear of missing out and we are far less productive because we can't "unglue" our eyes from our screens. 

Lesson Learned

From this project, I've realized how greatly social media has impacted those of different generations. There is a sense of comfortability on different platforms. This ranges drastically as we compare the oldest/youngest generations' preferences.
